ATX, Open Tshirts, 29/4/01 and DVD

All, As usual it never rains but it poors. I have a number of questions, and was wondering if anyone else on the list could help. 1) Is it possible to configure linux to turn an ATX pc off when you run halt? 2) Who was the person on mondays IRC who had started a open tshirts project? 3) Does anyone know if and what is happening on 29/04/01 with regard National linux day? We only have 29 days left to plan! 4) And finally, I currently refuse to buy a DVD player(as in Hi-fi seprate) for a number of reasons, most notably I feel that region coding is an infringment on my rights. But I do feel alot happier with the idea of playing DVD's from linux with the DeCSS(or similiar) code. Can anyone advise on what I would need to play DVD's full screen(or even better 16:9 on a normal screen) with normal stereo sound out the sound card. 4-b) What would I then require to output the sound to a AC-3 decoder? installing debian probs

Hullo list. I'm stuck in a loop installing this here debian...... "do you want to create /etc/X11/XF86Config file? y/n" y ......."_X11TransSocketUNIXConnect: Can't connect: errno = 111 Unable to communicate with X server! The /etc/X11/XF86Config file was not created. Press [Enter] to switch to graphics mode. This may take a while... Press [Enter] to continue Pressing enter, of course, takes it back to the beginning, but there doesn't seem to be another option. Any ideas? Thanks, Jenny.

debian kernel source problem

Hi all, Just trudging along trying to install ALSA. Have recompiled kernel to support VFAT, sound (with no modules), and loadable module support. Compiled the ALSA driver (finally), after realizing it was looking for sources in /usr/src/linux and inserting --with-kernel=/usr/src/kernel-source-2.2.12 (where my recompiled srcs live). Now though, a problem with recompiling the lib packages (alsa). On the mailing list archives, it says I might have to upgrade libc (suggestion was to upgrade to frozen/potato libc6)... Is it alright to have sources live as kernel-source-2.2.12? How do I change that to /usr/src/linux if I need to? Because I wanted to boot an NTFS partition also, I did 'make zdisk' after 'make bzImage' (linux kernel how-to) so I could boot from diskette...is that the problem? FTP and telnet connections to a RH box

Greetings, I've just reinstalled RH61 onto the same (local) box it was on before - but now for some reason when I try to FTP or telnet into it it makes the connection but never sends a response request for username and password (or at least it times out after a couple of minutes) so I can't actually log in! I can however Samba into it no probs and http works fine too - any ideas as I'm only a low-to-middling propellorhead. I have changed nothing hardwarewise all I did was reformat and install from the exact same copy of RH61 as previously - I suspect I may not have included something in the custom install. Debian Install

Hi All, - any advice? Installing Debian - would you recommend "Basic" as the O'Reilly Debian book instructs for initial users, or would I be better with one of the other options? I want networking, samba, X. I can see me installing basic then spending the rest of the year trying to add the extras. Adam - many thanks for the loan of the Debian book, BTW, it's most helpful. Linux Install Problems?

Just got a copy of RH7 (£5) from linuxdot.org. I installed a 'workstation' onto my Dell Latitude C600 via the DVD rom - it took 20 (twenty!) minutes from loading the cd, making the boot disk,to install nearly a gig and recognised all the devices, make and boot from a boot floppy and be up and running in Gnome. alsa-long filenames

Hi all, anonymous coward (though pretty constant reader): After much elbow grease and humbling experiences, I've managed a Debian 2.2 kernel re-compile (very scary for a newbie like me) so to get sound support without soundcard selection (needed by ALSA drivers) and to enable loadable modules. Now though, everything I read with a long filename (from a CD burnt in windoze, 'course) such as alsa-driver0.5a.bz2 comes up alsa-d~1.bz2, so killing the file when I try to untar. I know there is an easy way to do this (please?), but do I have to recompile the kernel again to support long filenames? Linux on a AJP SiS 630 Notebook

I have recently acquired an AJP notebook which is based on a SiS 630 chipset. The video RAM is shared from the main memory and is currently set to 16 Mb. I am unable to get X running on it. The screen just goes white and stays that way. If someone has configured X on a similar machine I would greatly appreciate some help. The manual says that the display is TFT XGA but gives no hsync or vsync frequencies. If someone could give me an idea of what these are on similar displays then I could try tweaking the modelines in the XF86Config. Best wishes Govind

I have created a script as under: #!/bin/sh # Start the connection pon # Wait until the connection is made until ifconfig ppp0 | grep "inet addr" > /dev/null; do sleep 1; done; # Get the mail and then poff. Using ; is better than && because # fetchmail exits with an error if it doesn't get any mail. fetchmail -d0 > /dev/null ; poff I copied this from a posting I saw on a newsgroup and it works perfectly well when run by root from the command line. However if I set it up to be run as a root cron job it doesn't work as it should. After the script has been started by cron I see an entry for the script and an entry for 'sleep 1' in the list of running processes. If I run ifconfig ppp0 at this time I see a line starting 'inet addr' but the 'until' loop never exits. Can anyone offer advice as to why this should be happening? Barry Samuels

Hi People, I have just placed an order with the linux emporium http://www.linuxemporium.co.uk for Debian 2.2r2 and a copy of John's Latest and Greatest CD. If you want a CD-R copy of any of the above could you let me know now so I can go and buy a spindle of CD-Rs and get burning (assuming that John get me the cd's to me before Sunday). If you want a copy of Debian please let me know which cd's you want i.e. only the 1st or all the binary cd's or all of them including the source. I will have to ask for the price of the blank CD-R's (or you can bribe me with old computer hardware or chocolate!). Also if anyone has a copy of partition magic could they please bring it on Sunday? we can then do an install on a Transmeta based laptop (Sony VAIO C1VE) if you do. thanks Adam

Kit going free to a good home

The following bit of kit is going free to a good home due to lack of space. Whoever wants this must collect unless they are close to PE32 [Swaffham/Dereham]. 1 HP scanjet IIc SCSI flatbed scanner c/w document feeder + HP SCSI card. Cost over £2,500 new, built like a brick s**thouse and weighs about the same. This works under Linux using my Adaptec card. The original HP card is a rebadged Symbios and I havn't tried this. Will not work under NT or Windows 2000 with the original card as HP stopped supporting the drivers after Windows 95. I have had it working with Adaptec EZ-Scsi on all MS platforms. Hi all This discussion is already past its sell-by-date so I don't want to prolong it any further unnecessarily. In my office (V Small Co.) I get very tired of anyone and everyone passing on the latest 'Virus Warning' or something so I have alot of sympathy with MJ. I have implemented a virus/security policy as follows : Every Monday Morning I visit the website of our virus checker vendor and download the latest updates, then install them. I also visit www.securityfocus.com (good source of general info), www.cobalt.com (our webserver vendor) www.redhat.com (our in-house linux vendor) www.microsoft.com (our desktop/server vendor) and check all the security advisories, download any necessary patches and install them. Meanwhile, I subscribe to a couple of the (relevant) advisory newsletters from security focus and read them when they arrive. That's it. An update on my little problem - After recompiling the kernel and found I then had a corrupt source file. Checked the sources on another machine and everyting looked fine.... Put the problem to one side for a week or so and returned to it this weekend. The NFS download and compile worked without a hitch. For a while at least !! Started getting a new error - Something to do with an IDE error. OK swap the dive with another one, still the same problem - Try both the drives in another box and found both to be fine. Last straw - Changed the PSU. Everything has been running fine for the last three days. It looks as if it has been a hardware problem causing the trouble. Call it AELUG, E for Expert. I personally am still at the stage where everything I hear about linux, kernels, networking, makes my eyes bulge and my head fill up like a sponge. Kerin's post was relevant to me, i.e. I learnt quite a lot of different things from it and the responses. Isn't this the point of the lug groups, or am I too low down to get "the point"? I have in my posession no fewer than 20 of Linuxcare's "Bootable Business Card" cdroms plus a few stickers and other bits and pieces. As usual they were handing these out at Linuxworld in New York so I asked Linuxcare to send some my way for distribution at our next meet and thus they arrived today :-) For those that haven't come across these before, Linuxcare have basically managed to get about 100Mb worth of Linux recovery tools onto a bootable CD the size of a credit card. These things are incrediably useful if you come across a Linux box that no longer boots or has some other weird problem; it's stuffed with useful utilities and it's all bang up to date (it'll mount ReiserFS partitions for instance). Anyhow, if you want one I'll be giving them out on a first-come-first-served basis in Syleham. See you there :-) Gareth

We will do the normal whip round of a pound a head, any surplus being donated to SWCC funds. As an aside we could really do with other venues for these meetings this one should have been at the UEA but Mark is up to his eyeballs in work at the moment so I'm quite happy to host again. Hi everybody I am here in the John Innes Centre, Norwich. I have come here from Lucknow, India to research on plant viruses. I have been using Linux for about eight years now. All my installations were done from CD's which come with an Indian magazine called 'PC Quest' (www.pcquest.com). At work here I use Windows NT and at home it is Red Hat 6.2 running Gnome installed off a PC Quest CD on a Pentium 66 MHz with 24 Mb RAM. Believe me, it is very usable! Most of the time that I am on a machine I am playing with PERL scripts for manipulating / analysing nucleotide sequence data. Hoping to hear some nice discussions on this list. Windows requires you to download and install security updates from Microsoft, doesn't it? Well, if you've got Redhat, you should download and install updates from them on a regular basis, just the same. If you have Debian, you should set apt to get them for you and use it on a regular basis. etc SuSE etc Slackware etc Like I said, other mailing lists are for security alerts. We have neither the time nor the expertise to check and handle all of them on a LUG list. This place is really for the LUG and things affecting LUG members which are best dealt with by other members. We seem to handle most general problems quite well, but I don't want to see it drown in real and fake security warnings, as it surely will. Hi all What I know about this : Technically Ramen is a worm (not necessarily a virus as such except in the sense that it is self replicating) It uses standard buffer overflow routines ( code freely available from : www.attrition.org, www.securityfocus.com, www.insecure.org) to attack known weaknesses. So effectively it is merely an amalgamation and automation of existing hacking code, with a little port scanning & network detection (OS Fingerprinting by TCP/IP is pretty simple, and very accurate) thrown in for good measure. I understand it also attacks BIND (port 53) which is often the first line of attack anyway. There will be a script available soon to automate removal of RAMEN ( http://www.securityfocus.com/tools/1944) which is worth getting JIC. Previous advice about getting the latest fixes is still the best. (There are a number of ways of automating this but the first thing I recommend to anyone is to subscribe to bugtraq at securityfocus, and also LINUX Security Newsletter - same place). Hello Thank you for your reply, but as I keep trying to say is, as a "newbie" I and other do not know about kernel traffic. We have spent a lot of time trying to set up this, what seems a strange system, remember a lot of us are switching over from "Windows" were much of this is done for you, You may say well this is something you should have looked at before. maybe, maybe not. But until someone like your self mentions it, we don't know of it. and all the books I have read have not mentioned it. I sent the article in for two reasons, 1) I,m always being told this can not happen. 2) more importantly, if someone out there is running 6.2 or 7.0 and they have not updated, is not it a friendly thing to do and warn them that they could have a problem. remember the spirit of the Linux world. Hi I,m not realy sure who to send this too, I,ve just picked up the new issue of the "new Linux Magazine". and theres an article in there worth reading, as follows, Page 7 VARUS WARNING A new Internet worm that targets computers running Red Hat Linux is be described by some virus experts as the first successful attack on the Linux O/S, which is widely considered to be one of the best protected platforms around. To penetrate computers that have Red Hat Linux 6.2 or 7.0 installed, The Ramen worm exploits 3 security breeches loopholes - in.ftpd, rc.statd and PLRng. These were identified and closed by developers last summer. The breaches are from the buffer overflow category and could enable hackers to send an executable code to the remote system and run it without the user's authorisation. The Ramen worm infects a system by sending data to a target computer receives data which then overflows the system's internal buffer. This enables the worm code to gain root privileges. It then initialises the command processor that executes the worm's instructions. Next the worm creates the /usr/srcl.poop folder and launches the "lynx" internet browser. There it downloads theworm's archive RAMEN.TGZ from a remote system. After this, Ramen opens the archive and executes its main file START.SH. The worm changes the contents of INDEX.HTML files found on the system, so that when affected HTML files are run they display the following message. RameN Crew Hackers looooooOOOOOOOOOOOve noodles. Internet security - cable modems ?

Hi, I would appreciate your help once again, I am using RH 7.0 at the moment and have just configured my NIC (Netgear fa311) to enable my cable modem internet connection. RH 7.1(fisher) configures everything automatically IE NIC,DHCP and firewall. this is all very well but doesn't teach me a great deal about what is going on in the background. I intend to set up RH 7.0 with a firewall and any other security measures that are needed. I would very much appreciate any suggestions/help that anyone can offer to assist me setting up the required services. Things along the lines of :- Which services to disable (and how) Which firewall - ipchains or other package and tips on setting it up TIA

I've spent hours and hours trying to set up Hylafax/Faxgetty to auto detect fax/data calls and respond appropriately. I have had partial success in that I can now get it to distinguish between fax and data calls and accept the fax or start mgetty for a data call. Part of my original problem was that the default config.ttyS1 GettyArgs included -h as the first option which caused Mgetty to start and then immediately stop after printing a 'Usage' line in the log. I have, at least been able to correct that. My current config.ttyS1 gettyargs is: GettyArgs: "-D %l dx_%s" I have also tried "-r -s %s %l" together with many other combinations. If I dial in from another machine the call is answered as a data call and mgetty started but on the machine that I dialled in from I see a line of about two dozen characters, most of which appear to be '?', then the cursor returns to the beginning of the line, overwrites part of the existing line before dropping down one line, printing a few more characters then dropping down another line and displays 'NO CARRIER'. I never get to see a login prompt and these tests are costing me a fortune in telephone calls! It doesn't seem to make any difference whatever options I try the result is always as described above. The getty on the Hylafax machine is left running and has to be killed. Check out Ghostscript/Ghostview - this will allow you to print almost any format to almost any printer. It will display these formats to screen as well. Most things the evile (sic) empire charge for have been free from GNU for twenty years or so! As a matter of restraint I'd sit back and check what printing you REALLY need. If you print out a lot of things that you can't be bothered to read on screen - long alug mailings etc - you really dont want to be paying 4+ pence per page and then throwing away half the colour cartriges. The company I work for spends 90%+ of its printing costs on paper and ink that goes from printer to hand to bin. If its an attractive document e-mail it and let the recipient print it ,if its not an old dot matrix will almost certainly do and and old line printer is a revelation! But they dont beep when thay run low on ink which some people just CANT (sic) live with. But then thay dont print illegibly in yellow either. Palmtops & Linux - big decision needs making.

I am on the brink of buying a palmtop but can't decide which. Many things affect my decision but the most important thing is successful linking with my Linux box at work where it will be synced and backed-up. Have members any experience of the Handspring visor (Prob deluxe) and the Palm (m100, IIIxe) working with their Linux boxes? Linux *is* for desktops!

Well, I did it. After my "Linux is not for desktops?" post, I had many messages of advice and suggestions - and I have finally turned off my windows machine for good. I'm now using: Mail: mutt - took some getting used to, but I'm now amazed at how powerful it is. I can do things with a couple of keypresses that I wouldn't have considered in Eudora! News: slrn - Again totally different philosophy to Agent, but well worth the effort... Now all my news is collected by slrnpull, and I can read quickly whenever I want to. Office: StarOffice. It does all it can to make MSOffice people feel at home, but I'm still having a few problems. Web: Konqueror/Netscape. Konqueror is nice and fast for nearly everything. I particularly like the way that (from KDE) I can hit the 'windows' button on my keyboard, type in a URL, and I'm away. If there is something that Konqueror can't handle, then I switch to netscape. So many thanks for all your advice - it was well worth it, and I'm so pleased to have finally ditched Microsoft.. Couple of things I'm still having problems with - if anybody's found a solution I'd be grateful to hear about it: * I can't print TrueType fonts from StarOffice. They are displayed, but when I print, they get changed to something else. I can't find any info about this at all. My printer is a Tektronix Phaser 560, which handles Postscript level2, and can (apparently) deal with type-42 fonts (whatever that means)... but no luck at all yet... * Konsole in KDE has this neat 'session' manager that lets you start several shells in one window. However, I have found no way of doing this automatically when I log in. It would be useful if it could launch a konsole window with several shells aready running... Anybody have any ideas? chris. ps.. Would anybody be interested in coming to an 'outdoor' meet in the early summer - weather permitting - we have an ideal garden for this, a permanent internet connection, so you could be wired up to the net properly, and we could follow it with a barbecue (and a swim in the pool for those that wanted...)

Hello All! (Sorry; it is stupid question time again:) Does anyone know how I can force the kernel to read the hardware net address on my pc card? I'm using RH6.2. with kernel 2.2.14. on a laptop (someone has suggested upgrading to 2.4 and that may help, but a bit beyond me at present, would prefer an easier solution). Many thanks for everyone's help with Samba last week, BTW......still not running but I'm starting to know where I'm coming from now, and will spend some time poking before posting further. However it has left me with a small problem. When running the PMFirewall setup it asks if my local network needs access to the internet. I answered 'No' on the basis that only one machine needs access. Now I find that when the firewall is running machines on the local network are denied access to the machine running the firewall. Can some clever firewall guru tell me what to alter to give access to this machine from the local network when the firewall is running. These other machines do not need to access the Internet. Thanks Steve. The kernel was compiled on one machine. Most of the RPMs collected from various sources - the rest built 'in house'. The whole lot put together on another machine...mmmm..... NFS Install probs.

Quietly lurking, I have hit a small problem with an NFS install on a distro I'm compiling. Assembling all the RPM's on the server along with the install shell, everything seemed to be going fine - The early NFS installs of just the base packages worked a treat and the machine would boot up without a problem..... Now I have the bulk of the programs put together for this distro - When I do an NFS install, it all goes as I expect. But on booting up the new machine, lilo does what it should, the kernel starts to load, then trouble. I get an error message "crc error --system halted--". This is before any of the system checks or init scripts are run. I'm rather stumped as to what the problem is, any ideas folk ?? Regards, Paul.

Hello all. I don't know if I am a Linux newbie or not [If you can compile kernels OK are you a newbie ???] but I have been using Linux for over a year now and am very, very impressed. I try and use Linux instead of MS whenever possible. Unfortunately I have to use MS as well and I boot Win 2000, DOS and Redhat quite happily on my PC. I work as a senior tech support specialist and I also have a good grounding in electronics. Reason for joining ALUG ? Apart from living in Mileham, I think meeting some experienced users would be good as it will knock a good chunk of Microsoft out of me !!! Of course, I will be happy to contribute my limited Linux knowledge but I realise there are lots of far more experienced people then me out there ... Oh yes, and I have a real nasty problem with a Promise Fasttrak controller module that I cannot compile against the vanilla RH6.2 2.2.x kernel or the latest 2.4.x kernel release. Promise support is naff, and they only distribute the SMP module in .o format ... I can boot the box OK as Linux is on a standard IDE drive, but it bombs when insmod tries to load ft.o for the RAID drive with unresolved symbols. I can install ft.o fine on a clean install using the 'expert text dd' options, and mount drives etc. but when I recompile the kernel [I need NTFS support] I get unresolved symbols. Using the insmod -f option does not allow the module to load. I am including SCSI and RAID support in the kernel. I have also checked the symbol versioning : mv .config 000.cfg make mrproper mv 000.cfg .config make dep clean modules modules_install bzImage As I cannot get the source to this module am I doomed to having no NTFS support ? Any suggestions, comments, brickbats etc. more than welcome. Thanks.

Morning All! Still no luck with Samba at home, so I wondered if I post up my various settings, if anyone sees anything glaringly obvious set wrong, could they give me a shout? UNIX Airways Everyone brings one piece of the plane along when they come to the airport. They all go out on the runway and put the plane together piece by piece, arguing non-stop about what kind of plane they are supposed to be building. Air DOS Everybody pushes the airplane until it glides, then they jump on and let the plane coast until it hits the ground again. Then they push again, jump on again, and so on ... Mac Airlines All the stewards, captains, baggage handlers, and ticket agents look neat and act exactly the same. Every time you ask questions about details, you are gently but firmly told that you don't need to know, that you really don't want to know, and that everything will be done for you without your ever having to know, so just shut up. Windows Air The terminal is pretty and colorful, with friendly stewards, easy baggage check and boarding, and a smooth take-off. After about 10 minutes in the air, the plane explodes with no warning whatsoever. Windows NT Air Just like Windows Air, but costs more, uses much bigger planes, and takes out all the other aircraft within a 40-mile radius when it explodes. Linux Air Disgruntled employees of all the other OS airlines decide to start their own airline. They build the planes, ticket counters, and pave the runways themselves. They charge a small fee to cover the cost of printing the ticket, but you can also download and print the ticket yourself. When you board the plane, you are given a seat, four bolts, a wrench and a copy of the seat-HOWTO.html. You take the seat to a location of your choice and bolt it into the deck, per the instructions. Once settled, the fully adjustable seat is very comfortable, the plan leaves and arrives on time without a single problem, the in-flight meal is wonderful. You try to tell customers of the other airlines about the great trip, but all they can say is, "Jesus, you had to do what with the seat? ... "

OpenProjects IRC looking for help

It seems that hogan.openprojects.net, the UK server of the network is "going away" at the end of the month. I know we have some people from various reasonably helpful places subscribed (even if some don't post) and wondered if anyone felt like running their software on a machine with network connection "as fast as possible, as well-homed as possible" in exchange for a mention in the MOTD (sign-on message). In the words of the network admin, "we won't use much bandwidth but we are increasing" -- MJR

I have just re-joined the list after retiring from work - whoopeee!! I am now well into North Norfolk - at Overstrand near Cromer so the ALUG meetings will definitely be on my agenda now as Norwich is only half an hour away. I'll check the archives to see what has been happening since Xmas. See you all soon. Ian

What were you thinking of writing the web database in, out of interest? Jenny.

MJR in a previous message spoke of a page of links to members home pages. I think it would be better if we had a page with somewhat more. How about a page with: name irc nick location occupation preferred distro hardware mug shot other interests. Thoughts, flames etc. Cheers, BJ
