Thanks for that, unfortunately I tried Freeserve and whilst the 1616 number downloaded into my Windows partition, i was told, (by the call centre operator), to delete it as it was being withdrawn, and woe, woe, its not just BT that's affected by their exchange, Freeserve doesn't work either! Unless 25 attempts to connect, (auto dialed continuously at 35sec. intervals), wasn't a fair trial. John Seago

locked directories -please help!

I can't access my cd-rom or floppy drive. In konqueror it says "you do not have enough permissions to read file:/mnt/cdrom. The same problem occurs in KDE, Gnome, Afterstep, Icewm and Blackbox. (Didn't try in Enlightenment, but somehow I doubt it is WM-specific!!!). ISP's

Does anyone on the list know of a reliable ISP providing unmetered access still using an 0800 dial in number? I ask as BT have changed me over from 08005879089 to 08089933004, despite knowing since May that the exchange I connect through will not connect the 08089933XXX number sets as it has not been modernised to do so. The 0800 ISP I had used since the number change, Nutshell, went belly up and ceased operating, I am therefore limited to pay-as-you-go through the mutual.net. I got Xine working (at last), but the performance is terrible for a system with 750 Mhz processor, 256MB RAM, 32MB Geforce2 card- well, terrible compared to Vidoelan on Win2k. I'm running it off X3.3.6, so I'm thinking that maybe an upgrade to 4.1.0 would improve performance? I *have* got the nvidia drivers installed. In the install notes, it says to backup your existing X installation. Which folders would these be, I can think of: /usr/X11R6/ /etc/X11/ But I'm sure there are some libraries too. Does anyone know where they are?(This is on my Mdk8.0 box) The other problem is how can you back up a whole directory. Obviously cp /etc/X11/ /etc/Xll.bak/ doesn't work- there must be a simple way on the command line- anyone know it? Can anyone see any pitfalls? Like, would I have to reinstall Xine, or the nvidia drivers? That would be a pain, it took me long enough to get Xine working in the first place. I issue that command, it kills the TERM signal, it says "Going into maintenance mode", then hangs for a bit (well, it *IS* only a 486) and then shuts down. I personally created an alias for the command (I couldn't find any other aliases), so it's all OK. Of course, I can't actually use the laptop for squat until I get my PCMCIA card working, but then I have a stack of HOWTO's (PCMCIA, Net, some other misc stuff) next to me to keep me going. Who knows about Diald ?

Debian 2.2 - kernel 2.2.19 I have just tried to setup Diald without much luck. Having installed it I noticed that it tried to connect immediately after boot up. Why should it do this? I had changed the 'Connect' script to suit my requirements as per instructions and also the configuration file. I also noticed that rwhod was trying to contact the IP address (194.109.2.10) in the configuration file every 3 minutes. Is this IP address supposed to be a dummy address ? Am I supposed to change it ? When Chat was started there was an 'alarm' in the output after the modem initialisation although the script would go on to connect but the connection was almost immediately closed. I have now uninstalled it to prevent the very many rwhod messages in the log complaining that it couldn't contact 194.109.2.10. Has anyone installed it and got it working successfully? A few tips would be appreciated. Oh all right then, a lot of tips! Barry Samuels Professional Diald Dummy.

I have the `Linux Emporium' Disks for Progeny, but I did'nt manage to get it to install, as once past the initial stage, I could'nt get it to display, of course there may well be something wrong with the resolution `thingy' in my monitor. I also understand from a review that it will only install an american keyboard layout. Not very helpfull I know, but it's the best I can do. I am also rather puzzled as to why messages 3, 4, 5, 7 & 8 are somewhat wider than my screen. is this another manifestation of the =20 phenonmena? John

Oh yes, it does all the groovy things my other system does, stopping the daemons etc... then it seems to start up again into the login prompt, or after a lot more shutdown commands, puts me into the $BASH prompt. I have recently installed RH6.1 on my notebook, with no X (yay!). I have 2 problems with it:- 1) When it boots up, the PCMCIA service starts...OK then it comes up with 'delaying eth0 initialisation'. In /etc/pcmcia/config, it has a list of supported cards and mine - d-link de-660 is included (amongst about 100 others). How can I tell if it's actually recognising the card properly? How can I link it to eth0? The floppy drive is bust on the notebook (can read, can't write), so a network card is essential!!! I created a ifcfg-eth0 file in /etc/sysconfig using ifcfg-lo as a template- except with correct IP's. If I manually start ifcfg eth0 up I still get the same problem. :-/ 2) When I issue a Shutdown Now command from the shell, it shuts down and I get a $BASH prompt. Any number of quit, exit, shutdown commands don't seem to work and I end up powering off the laptop. Progeny Debian install problems

Has anyone tryed to install this version of GNU/linux? I got a copy from the Linux format mag. it has two iso images for the install disks. So ive made the two disks but there is no time during the install that i get asked to insert the second cd so none of the software gets installed thats on it :(. Address books

I have a fairly large contacts folder in MS Outlook 5 which I would dearly like to transfer over to my Linux box (seriously thinking of ditching MS Office for good here). I need the addresses etc in a format that the KDE address book can read. It can import *.wab files but Outlook won't export wab Outlook Express does but won't import from Outlook. Am I going to have to resort to csv text files or is their some other way. Indecently I have a Palm Vx with the data on synced from Outlook so if there is a way of syncing the palm with the KDE address book (kmail is my preferred mail client) I could do that. Distro is MDK 8.1 running KDE or Gnome and has the usual jpilot, kpilot and Gnome panel apps for syncing the Palm. Cheers, BJ

Linux and USB - follow-up

Thanks to everyone who contributed suggestions to getting a USB camera to work with Linux. I finally succeeded by installing Mandrake Freq with 2.4.6 kernel. Slackware using 2.4.5 wouldn't work, neither would Redhat with 2.4.2. If anyone else should be going down this path, feel free to ask and I'll be happy to compare notes. Gerald.

PostgreSQL problems

I've been running PostgreSQL for a while on a box here at work. This morning when I logged in, it completes a few queries, then stops progressing them. To complete a few more queries I need to restart postmaster. I have not changed any settings for a long time and it only started playing up today. Any ideas? FYI, I am running Postgres 7.03, and executing queries through PHP/Apache. This particular machine is running Mandrake 8.0. Ashley

Exim, Fetchmail, Procmail with Debian

Installed Debian (2.2 v3) this morning (crowd cheers!). I'm having a problem getting my incoming email to work. This is what I done: - installed Debian with Exim as default MTA - configured Exim (probably incorrectly) - Installed fetchmail, fetchmailconf - configured fetchmailconf (grab email from POP3 server @ dial.pipex.com) - Installed procmail - Set up a few simple .procmailrc filters Now when I run fetchmail -d0, it downloads the email from the pop server, but it does not arrive in /home/ash/mail as expected. On looking inside /var/spool/exim I get lots of: .com [205.158.62.41]: 550 5.1.1 <server2(a)email.com>... User unknown messages. This is for incoming email. Can anyone help or share their Exim config file for retrieving mail from a pop3 server? FYI, I will be on the ALUG channel for IRC this afternoon -- Ashley T. Syd, At last something positive, you say you can't see the =20's at the ends of the lines on your posts to the list but on the abovementioned list every line end, except the header and the first line of my message which you quote, the last line of your last paragraph, and the line "Best wishes" ends on my screen with =20. Can I assume therefore that what I am seeing, differs from that seen by others? Even more specifically can you see =20 on my posts but not on yours? (I was happier when it wasn't just me). Further are others seeing =20 on my posts, your posts, on both, or neither? Every time I start to see the very dim outline of a basic concept through the dense mist of ignorance, I get kicked back further than when I started. At least back in April I didn't know how much I didn't know (ignorance is bliss, it also gives one the confidence to plunge in regardless). This raises several issues for me: 1. Am I trying hard enough on my own? [Every thing I start to learn turns out to be interdependent on everything else I don't know, (as far as I know, if you leave a socket turned on the electricity leaks out into a puddle on the floor).] 2. should this be on main or social? 3. Hello, Trying to get APM working on my notebook, in the kernelconfig->general setup I said yes to 'Power Managment Support' && 'APM Bios Support as module' 'IGNORE..' as no, and yes to the next 5. Now, 'modprobe -v apm' results in: 'Warning: loading /lib/modules/2.4.1...../apm.o will taint the kernel: no license' Does anybody know what this means? Thanks, Andrew.

Problems with Grip and DVD drives

Lo all, I just puchased myself a DVD-Rom drive and a CD-RW drive to replace the broken CD-Rom drive in my main machine. Interestingly I now have a problem with ripping CDs. I can now use Grip (a very cool program that will rip your CD and encode it into mp3 or Ogg Vorbis and sort out making playlists and putting the files in the correct places for you) to rip CDs from the CD-RW drive but it just segfaults if I try and use the DVD-Rom?! The program loads and recognises the Cd and does the CDDB lookup and as soon as I tell it to rip+encode it segfaults. The DVD-Rom is sitting on hdc and it is a Sony DDU1621, and the CD-RW is a Freecom 32r 12r 10rw burnproof thing. I think I am going to check that my kernel is sane later today and that all the Bios settings for the ide bits are correct. Does anyone have any ideas as to what is up? Adam -- Adam

I must apologise for this mornings message. I wrote it just after the pain killers were kicking in, and as a consequence it seems a little incoherent, let me clarify. Like Syd I have noticed =20 at the ends of the lines, ( or where the line ends were when I wrote the message). This only seems to occur on the list, (unless those I have emailed individually know otherwise). Messages between myself and Syd don't show the =20, at least at my end. It appears to me therefore, as the problem comes and goes, irrespective of my settings, that the =20 appears somewhere between Syd and I, as senders, and the list itself. I am sending through the 01986 (Bungay?) exchange, which in one of the exchanges between myself and BT over the quality of their service, they told me had yet to be updated. I am of the opinion that it is somewhere along the route that the =20 appears on the final display of the message. EDI and X.400

Hi all, I am about to embark on an Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) project and have no real knowledge of X.400 (also specifically X.435), what it is etc, though I am getting to grips with the EDI message implementation I shall be dealing with. Does anyone know diddly about this stuff and if so please could you point me at some useful resources. I've been to ITU and registered to receive a couple of docs about MHS and EDI (well dissapointing to see them charging for their 'recommendations' documents - Dmitri Skylarov we love you!!). So far I know that I can set up X400 mailboxes in Exchange Server (cringe) but anyone who knows me would know that I would rather set up an enigma machine to decrypt 168bit 3des encoded messages delivered via morse signals over string and paper cups, transcribe them to phonographic cylinder with a sharp pencil and then forward them via carrier pigeon to the desk of the intended recipient!! But if I can do this in Exchange surely I do it with sendmail of something....... Also, I'd love to find some free software which can do the log-on, retrieval and extraction of EDI Messages from the mailbox. So far I have found a couple of proprietary thingies but again this doesn't appeal. Suffice to say I want to do it all under Linux... Sorry if this is a complete noddy email but as you can see I'm completely new to all of this. I managed to get my Fujifilm Finepix 40i to work with my Toshiba Laptop under Debian 2.2r3 by updating the kernel to 2.4.9, which also meant updating the following utils/modules, check that they are all recent versions: The SCSI modules (they all changed completely for the 2.4.X series kernels) The mount utility USBDEVFS module/util (tells you what devices/drivers you have hooked up, under /proc/bus/usb) I think that should do. There were a few other utils that needed to be upgraded to run my current kernel but they had nothing to to with the SCSI system or USB mass storage devices, or USB itself. If I can get off of my bum and turn up to an ALUG meeting I might bring my laptop and camera if anyone has any trouble setting up their own stuff Pete

Hi, I thought I might as well introduce myself and stop my lurking. My name is Mathew and I am a Perl programmer by trade (although I often get up to other things) and I work at home in a small town called Stowmarket in Suffolk. I started using Linux about 3-4 years ago, but have only picked it up again for a serious crack at it just recently. So for all intents and purposes I am a Linux newbie (so please don't hurt me if I ask some stupid questions). My current distro is Mandrake 7.2 which I am finding quite user friendly and helps a lot in the process of weening me off Windows. I hope to be able to make some meets soon, but work schedule is often hectic and I don't get much free time :( Anyhoo, its been great lurking so far. OK. This is weird. In the new Linux Format, there is a letter by "Steve Bates" about Enlightenment, and how it crashes with "missing line in config". If anyone has kept an archive of messages from the main list, look at my post with the subject "Crash". VERY VERY similar. Samba problem

Hi, I'm running Mandrake 7.2 on the spare box on my LAN and I decided it was time to stop using FTP to transfer files to it and to start using Samba to share files with the two windows boxes. After much messing about with smb.conf,smbd and nmbd, I managed to get the Linux box to show up in the Windows Network Neighbourhood. Unfortunately, whenever I try to access the shares on the Linux box it asks me for a password. I cannot find any password in the smb.conf and whatever passwords I submit using smbpasswd don't work either. Does anyone know why this is happening? (Sorry if I'm being a bit vague anywhere) TIA, Mat

The messages I received from you last nightwere ok, (no =20), but your postto the =20, I'll see if mine, doif this is posted I have only noticed thisproblem when posting to the list, (unless those I've replied to individually know otherwise), I can only conclude that it is caused by part of the route between ourselves and the List, I live in Halesworth, East Suffolk, and am connected via the 01986 (Bungay Exchange), which Bt Anytime claim is unmodenised and therefore unable to cope with my internet connectionat all. Kmail, line endings and char sets

Hi all Still battling with the basics. Do my posts appear with =20 line ends (can't remember if these represent CR or LF)? Apparently they do for some list readers. I am using Kmail 1.2 (KDE 2.1.1, mandrake 8.0). A general question: what is the recommended char set to use? And a KDE question - char sets seem to be set both under Settings>Configuration>Composer>Default Charset (main window) and under Options>Set Encoding in the composer window. How do these settings inter-relate? Finally, I have just noticed that word-wrap was set to 78. I have reset this to 68 and would appreciate any comments about whether this has improved things in any way. cheers Syd

Has anyone got Xine working on their system yet? It's being a bit of a pig. I have installed pretty much all the plugins (incl. the decss one and another for 'encrypted' DVDs)except one, which was not meant to be essential - dx3r I think it was called. I have ln -s /dev/cdrom /dev/dvd mount /mnt/cdrom /mnt/dvd Xine recognises that there is a DVD drive there, it recognises the .VBO files, but I get no output. One thing I think may be a problem is that I haven't set MTRR. (ref. Linux DVD howto). This requires my starting X and outputting to file so I can read a few configs of my videocard- e.g. it's base memory address. Unfortunately I can't do this from within Gnome or KDE. My system boots straight into an X environment (KDE). How can I stop X and go to the command line and startx 2> xoutput (xoutput being a fairly good name for the output of x ;) ) Is it just stopx ? Anyone had any success? Anything else you can think for me to consider? I have a Geforce 2 MX card, with the appropriate drivers and kernel from nvidia. Please could anyone shed some light on this for me. I borrowed a digital camera and wanted to download its shots into my Linux box (Redhat 7.1 2.4.2 kernel P166 64Mb RAM). I hunted around and managed to find a place on the linux-usb.org site where several people had managed this feat with the same camera that I'm using (and using all sorts of kernel versions such as 2.0.x, 2.2.x, 2.4.x), which is a Fuji finepix 1400 Zoom with 8Mb memory card. However, I simply cannot get it to work for me. I modprobe the usb-storage, usb-core and usb-uhci modules, as per instructions and they all appear to load, according to lsmod. SCSI support is already loaded. When I then plug the camera in and switch it on, there's disk activity and files appear in /proc/scsi. So then I do the "mount /dev/sda /mnt/camera" bit and I always get a message that /dev/sda isn't a block device or sda doesn't exist. I've tried variations, like "mount -t msdos ..." or "mount -t vfat ..." but it makes no difference. It seems that the USB link works but it all falls over when it comes time to access the mythical SCSI emulation or whatever it is to read the image files. Has anyone ever succeeded in this? I'd appreciate any guidance that's going - thanks! Gerald.

Now when you boot up, it SHOULD go to the normal text login screen. Well - it does for me.... Someone else on this list will most likely have a better way of doing what you want. Hope that helps? Hi, Red Lodge is quite a distance from Cambridge, especially with the strong culture of walking/cycling in this city, which is the main reason that we currently meet in such a central location. I enjoy a trip out though. I will be happy to drive over, so if anyone else wants to come you are welcome to a lift - I can take up to four other people. The proposed time and day is the same time we usually meet, so perhaps those going could meet at CB2 and go on from there? Sorry, I just saw Convoy on TV the other week ;-) The first message that made it to our list suggested that ALUG were thinking of having a meeting in Cambridge at some point. I was just wondering, if ALUG has members in Cambridge that want to meet, why don't they come along to Cambridge LUG meetings? Just curious. Oh, and is it really going to be in the truck stop? Hi guys.. A Q re linking filesystems. Want to join & make filesystems transparent between 3 Windows98 boxes, a Linux server and a Linux workstation. Now I've used Samba & found it great - for servers. Clients can see the server f/s - but the server itself can't see the shares on the Windows boxes (not quite right - Samba has some command line utilities giving views onto the client). I want all the box GUIs to be able to see all the shares -so, how to get Linboxen GUIs to see the MS shares? Also, in such an environment how to connect the two Linux boxes? NFS? This is something I have not as yet done. This OK running alongside Samba? The Linux I'll be using will be either Mandrake 7.2, Corporate or 8.1 (still not 100% convinced about the new kernel). ?:^) brodders
