In compiling my report about Linux for uni, I have merely skirted around the topic of LSB. I notice, for example, that there are only a few distros that have LSB compliance. I guess that the LSB is a good idea (in theory), since Linux has gone the way UNIX did by diversifying (perhaps too much)... Does anyone have any thoughts on this? It seems, also, that compliance means that RPM needs to be used? (That's insane IMHO, but I haven't tried APT-RPM). Any thoughts oh wise ones? ;)

Some extra information which, I think, may answer one of my own questions. I have just connected my laptop to the network and tried to print to the same remote printer. This works perfectly well. I also see in lpr.log: machine1 lpd[28252]: machine3.mynetwork requests recvjob timicrol machine1 lpd[28252]: reading df file for timicrol machine1 lpd[28252]: finished reading df file for timicrol machine1 lpd[28252]: reading cf file for timicrol machine1 lpd[28252]: finished reading cf file for timicrol I don't see this when trying to print from the Mandrake machine (Machine2) so I suspect there is nothing going to the remote host (Machine1). Anything I could try on the Mandrake machine to try and sort this? (Anyone have a steam roller ?) Barry Samuels

Problem No. 347 - Remote printing - any more offers?

My problem is still there. Everything I have tried hasn't worked. The machine from which I am trying to print (Mandrake 9.0) says that the remote host refused to accept the control file but the remote host (Debian Testing) doesn't show any signs of access or attempted access in the logs. Stopping the firewall on the remote host makes no difference. Is there any way that I can find out on which machine the problem lies? All other network functions perform properly. I think that the Mandrake machine is lying to me but I can't prove it. Barry Samuels

Problem No. 347 - Remote printing

Well - it feels like that sometimes. I have two machines networked. Machine1 (Debian Testing) has two printers - one on the parallel port and one on a USB port. I want to be able to print from Machine2 (Mandrake 9) to Machine1 but when I try I see a message in the logs 'Remote host did not accept the control file'. I see this whichever printer I try and use so I assume the problem is on Machine1 but I don't know how to correct it. Machine1 does have an /etc/hosts.lpd with the following entry: machine2.mynetwork There is an iptables firewall running (Endoshield) but I have tried after shutting down the firewall to no avail. All other networking functions correctly. Any advice would be appreciated. Barry Samuels

Problem installin Videolan Client

Hi all, I'm having trouble installing Videolan Client. I'm using Redhat 8.0 (2.4.18-19). I've installed packages for libdvdcss,libdvdread and libdvbpsi but when I try to install the vlc packages with the command 'rpm -Uvh vlc-0.4.6-1.i586.rpm vlc-mad-0.4.6-1.i586.rpm vlc-gnome-0.4.6-1.i586.rpm' I get the following error message :- error: failed dependencies: liba52.so.0 is needed by vlc-0.4.6-1 libavcodec.so is needed by vlc-0.4.6-1 libmad.so.0 is needed by vlc-mad-0.4.6-1 Can anyone help me out ?

Its superb but theres a few hitches Linux wise.. 1) You can only register using a windows box and IE5/5.5 and no firewall running! Once up and running turn off the modem for an hour or two and then you can DHCP on using Linux but make sure your firewalls tight and you passwords are shadowed - I left mine unsecure to see what happened and got hacked pretty quickly one an attempted takeover and once sendmail was so busy I had to cold boot! 2) I get 1.5M UDP (mainly who-has) on my port per week so watch out what you do with a tcpdump output on a small router. 3) I had to have the engineers round 3 times to get it sorted properly. Warning: With 600k you can browse everything useful in about a week! And those nasty sites with splash screens everywhere can download too fast for you to stop them so be ready to CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE Tom __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? wireless networking

Thanks to everyone who replied to my wireless network questions the card is up and running. I brought a DLink DWL-500 which has the prism2 chipset which seems to be the most supported chipset. Here's somethings I found useful. There is a RedHat RPM for setting up wireless network cards which was handy it can be found at prism2.unixguru.raleigh.nc.us and includes all the documentation as well. http://jgo.local.net/LinuxGuide/linux-ethernet.html for the basics of which scripts to edit to get your network going. Knoppix problem

I seem to be having problems with the ALUG mailing list. The message that I last sent wasn't returned to me as it usually is and I have received no mail from ALUG since. I see on the ALUG site archives that my message is there together with two replies for which I thank the people concerned. As far as the SCSI modules go I really can't remember if the module offered was ncr53c8xx.or sym53c8xx.o but it was the only one offered. SCSI adapters in both machines are Symbios adapters. Linux Anti-virus software.

Does anyone know of a reasonably priced anti-virus product for Linux? Ideally we would want incoming and outgoing mail scanned and if possible HTTP/FTP downloads. This is for Red Hat 7.3 to protect PCs that will be using it as a mail/proxy server. Regards, Rob.

Knoppix problem

I have recently acquired a Knoppix CD. Neither of my two computers will boot from a CD so I made a boot floppy from the knoppix image provided. Booting from machine 1, a dual CPU with 512MB ram and all SCSI devices produces the message 'Can't find KNOPPIX file system, sorry' and I find I'm dumped into a *very* restrictive shell which, although it includes 'insmod', doesn't include 'ls' which is not very helpful. Insmoding the correct SCSI module gets me precisely nowhere and 'lsmod' produces nothing. Trying the 'expert' boot gives me a list of SCSI modules and having selected the appropriate module I get the same result. Booting from machine 2 with 128MB ram and also all SCSI gets me into the full Knoppix system without any problems. Although both machines use the same SCSI module, ncr53c8xx, one of the differences is that Machine 1 has a dual channel SCSI adapter which is fairly modern and Machine 2 has a single channel adapter which is some years old. Anyone have any experience of this? Regards Barry Samuels

Realplayer plugin for Mozilla uses 98% CPU!

I use Mozilla 1.0 on Debian Woody. I have installed RealPlayer8, and can run realplay fine. However, when I visit a website (such as the Radio 1 site, which is WHY I installed it, having used Windows for a project, I got rather addicted to John Peel's show again ;) ), realplay uses up to 98% of the CPU, meaning I have to kill the process. Typing about:plugins in the address bar gives: <snip> File name: /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/rpnp.so Mime Type Description Suffixes Enabled audio/x-pn-realaudio-plugin RealPlayer Plugin Metafile rpm Yes <snip> So it seems to be installed OK. Anyone else found this? Anyone had any luck with RealOne (the newer one?) I can't seem to find ANY plugin bundled with it. It's quite irritating. Specially cos my housemate oversaw both install processes... "so it took u about 3 minutes in Windows, and a whole night and it still doesn't work in Linux..." RH8 - ISDN

Hello, I am using an ISDN terminal from BT that they provided when I signed up gor their home highway service. It is connected to my pc via USB. I have discovered that this ISDN terminal is based on the ST-5481 chipset, wich when I was using Suse 8.1 was easy enough to configure as I just had to select the generic ST-5481 driver. I have only just started using RH8 and am unable to work out how to get my ISDN working. Obviously I would like to stick with RH8 but with no net connection its going to be hard. Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks

First off: thanks for the replies! Wow! ALUG'ers do it again! :) Second: I'm investigating this problem for a uni project (for my MSc), so I guess the ALUG archives are going into my bibliography! ;) so, umm... these units are *fictional* lol, sorry! :) Third: I kinda thought on scrapping the RS-232 thing, since I'm fairly comfortable with ethernet and TCP/IP, but since these units have rs-232 (and they were duly mentioned by my tutors) I thought "maybe there's a reason ppl still linger with it". My first idea was to have two ipcop (www.ipcop.org) servers(firewalls) at either end of the connection to sort out a vpn over the POTS. Luckily we are dealing with temperature ranges of 5-30, so there's no real safety issue that can't wait the time it takes to dial up! Fourth: 'tis my job to write the programs to handle this, so that's all cool. Well... of to do some planning and decide whether SSH tunnels or a VPN would be better in this case. Thanks! Ricardo

Rs-232 and terminal servers

I'm investigating a solution. Basically I have a unit that must be remotely monitored. The unit itself has an rs-232 connection and ethernet too. However, for the tiny amount of data transfer needed (it sends temperatures), the rs-232 should suffice. I was thinking that I could attach this device to some sort of terminal server and then attach the server to the internet via a free dial-up, or perhaps a 64k leased line (it needs to be constantly monitored). Has anyone done such a thing? If so, any tips as to what to use as a terminal server? I realise this might be old hat to the rest of you, but I have no experience of this! TIA Ricardo

Hi, I've just joined the mailing list. I've worked in the I.T. industry for a number of years as a programmer, designer etc. I'm currently using IBM's Websphere MQ with Java and am very interested in the concept of open source ( why give money to Bill Gates et al if you don't have to ? ) As Linux is the most popular open source OS, I thought it was about time that I learnt something about it. I look forward to participating in the group.

The other possibility is that you have to set a jumper on the motherboard to let the bios know that the memory is there. I remember struggling with this years ago, and then noticing just beside the SIMM socket there was a jumper to set the memory size. Dear All, can anyone help/put me straight on this. I have a i486 machine running Slackware 8.1. As a christmas present I bought it a 32MB Simm, it currently has 16MB installed (one module). When I replaced the 16MB with the 32MB the bios still only detects 16MB on boot and everything runs as before. No matter I thought - I have read somewhere that Linux will override such settings, but I have been unable to get the kernel (2.4.18) to do so. I read the lilo.conf man page which indicated that adding 'append="mem=32M"' to lilo would do it, but the computer would not boot after adding this. A further search of the internet produced a sort of How-to doc that lists three options (but I think is written for RedHat). The first of these is the same as the lilo.conf recommendation, the second involves giving mem sizes and start locations in hexadecimals e.g. append="mem=exactmap mem=0x9f000@0 mem=0x1f00000@100000" and the third is like the 2nd, but in english.. append="mem=exactmap mem#=640K@0 mem=31M@1M" all these end in the same result - failure to boot. I have tried these messages specifying 16MB as the memory size (incase there really was a problem with the 32MB size) but the result is the same. In the mini how-to it is suggested that white space is needed between the start quotes and the first mem statement - but that doesn't resolve this problem either. Phoenix Homepage

Ok so I may have a slight hangover, and thus not really firing on all cylinders. But this is driving me mad. I have Phoenix 0.5 installed. it's working really well for me apart from this one annoying problem. Regardless of what I set as the homepage Phoenix always starts by displaying http://www.barnesandnoble.com/. If I click the home button Phoenix will go to my configured homepage. and when starting up you can see it starting to load it in the status bar at the bottom of the window before going to barnesandnoble. I've greped both my .phoenix/ directory and the installation directory for the URL. found nothing. Done a google search and looked theough the Moz docs all to no avail Any ideas anyone before I start downloading the source and looking through that ? Wayne

A Postfix mystery

I have just replaced Exim with Postfix. There are a few things not yet working as I want them but there is also one oddity. Hidden Knowledge

I've just been having a tidy up of my ALUG Main mail folder. There's a long list of submissions I've kept because they contained info. that I thought might be useful. It then occurred to me that all this info. is already in the mailing list archives anyway. Could we make some sort of search facility available for the archives? or is it better to download the consolidated list and search it locally? If so what's the best way? Kernel Config for Dialup Clients

I'm having a number of silly little problems with my Debian install when setting up the PPP dial up connections. I won't go into detail because I don't think they are the main issue. Trouble is that I've rebuilt the kernel to match my hardware config. In the process I've taken out a lot of the server side networking support as I only intend to use the system as a dialup client. So apart from async PPP support and iptables (firewall) what is the minimum kernel config and services required for a dialup client only system? Moving directories to a new partition

The Linux partition on my triple boot Windows/Linux PC has gradually been filling up over the past few months and is now 98% full with just 40MB remaining. I have therefore had a clear out on my Windows partition to create some free space and have been able to create two new small partitions which I can now use with Linux to ease some of the strain. My current setup is: /dev/hda1 Windows /dev/hda2 swap /dev/hda5 /boot /dev/hda7 / I would like to change this to: /dev/hda1 Windows /dev/hda2 swap /dev/hda5 /boot /dev/hda7 /usr /dev/hda12 / /dev/hda13 /home I have formatted these two new partitions and moved /home from hda7 to hda13 ok and deleted it from hda7. I now want to move everything else apart from the /usr directory from hda7 to hda12. What is the best way to tell Linux to move everything except this one directory from one partition to another (hda12 is a lot smaller than hda7 and is not big enough to hold /usr even temporarily)? Greetings Penguin Worshippers, Just signed up for your group since I've decided to have another go at getting into linux. I failed a couple of years back after giving up on getting my network card working w/ Red Hat 7.1. I even had 2 linux gurus come in and try and get it working with no success. I am a student placement working as an OSS Engineer at BTexact in Ipswich, Suffolk. I've always been a big programmer/hacker/code monkey and wisked away many an hour making some useless application or another. I'm getting fed up with doing windows programming and wanting to try something different... And so my long journey towards a new faith, "linux", begins. Under the true gods... a Penguin and a Goat. So, to start off. What distros are used by most of you, since I don't wanna start using a distro I can't get help for. Plus, I don't know which Distro would be best suited for a homeuser/developer/gamer. The only two distros I've really had a look at are Debian and Red Hat. One, because a mate of mine used it, and the other simply because I hear the name Red Hat all the time (Never knew if thats a good thing or a bad thing...) I have a small home network of just two machines. Machine1 runs Debian Testing with Exim and Procmail. Machine2 is running Mandrake 9 with Postfix. I have just spent about two half-days trying to set things up so that I can send mail from one machine to another. After having spent hours searching for information on both my own machine and on the Internet I have to admit defeat. When I try to send mail from a user on either machine to a user on the other I get the following message: 'Host lookup did not complete' /etc/hosts.conf on both machines: order hosts,bind multi on /etc/hosts on machine1: 127.0.0.1 localhost 192.168.1.1 machine1.mynetwork machine1 192.168.1.2 machine2.mynetwork machine2 # The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts # (added automatically by netbase upgrade) ::1 ip6-localhost ip6-loopback fe00::0 ip6-localnet ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix ff02::1 ip6-allnodes ff02::2 ip6-allrouters ff02::3 ip6-allhosts Surely it can't be this difficult? I just wondered how many people were aware of two recent threats to free software. 1. W3C "royalty freee" patent policy proposals. -------------------------------------------- The proposed policy permits W3C members to commit their patent claims "royalty-free" for use by implementers of the standard, but with "field of use" restrictions that would be incompatible with section 7 of the GNU General Public License. Such "field of use" restrictions, in other words, would prevent implementation of W3C standards as Free Software. Details at http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/w3c-patent.html. Comments to W3C must reach <www-patentpolicy-comment(a)w3.org> by Tuesday 31 December 2002. 2. SuSE mini home network

Hello again, I eventually gave up with Mandrake and installed SuSE 8.1 Professional instead on both my machines. Works much better and was totally easy to set up. So now I have a different question if anyone can answer it... (I don't think its a hard one... ) I have two machines in my mini home network, one dual booting MSW98SE and SuSE8.1Prof and the other just booting SuSE8.1Prof (because its only got a diddy 4Gig hard drive so it didn't seem worth putting both operating systems on it.) One of the machines connects to the internet via 56k modem (I intend to upgrade to ADSL in a few months time but am working with this set up for now). We use KMail as our mail client, and I would like to set it up so we can access our accounts from either machine. There are three seperate users. Anyone know how to set it up to do this? Anton

Linux booting from second ide controller?

Hi, Ive just got a new computer with win 2000 installed. Its also got alot of specialist software and device drivers(not avalible for linux) so im keeping it(i also like it its the only version of windows i can say that about). So my problem is that i dont want to re-install windows 2000 on a smaller partition unless i have REALY have to. If there were a version of fips or somthing similare then id maybe resize it so i could fit a smallish "/boot" partision. The boot partition needs to be in the first 8 Gig if i remember correctly or is that just older computers/drives? I do have a spare hd lying around not doing much but i seem to remember theres a problem getting linux to boot fromt he second ide controller, am i wrong? Also is there anyproblems booting win2000 with lilo? Same as win98 right? Newbie Redhat 8.0 install probs

Hi All, I'm a relative new-comer to the world of Linux and need some advice/help regarding an install of Redhat 8.0. I'm installing to a second HD on the primary channel, PCChips 810, 384MB, Radeon 7500VE to a Dell 1025HE monitor. This is networked via crossover cable to a RISC OS box using a KVM. Everything seems to progress fine, including the graphics card selection. The installer picks up the correct card model, RAM type and size. The problem arises with the monitor selection, it reports "un-probed". I have tried selecting the correct Dell model from the list but it will not give me the test screen or indeed any other help. If I then continue with the install the boot screen errors on the boot screen with EE for the graphics card and the monitor and then hangs. The error is something along the lines of 'screens found but no usable screens defined' or very similar. Has anybody had this problem or can anyone shed any light? TIA -- Greg Harris (Norwich)

DVD / DMA

I was wondering if anyone could help me with the following please? I installed ogle a while back but the DVD playback kept jumping. On the assumption that this was ogle playing up I installed xine, and the test script that comes with it mentioned that my DVD player hadn't got DMA enabled. following the instructions to enable it just caused my system (SuSE 8.0) to fall over in a heap. There is no problem under windows though. I assume therefore that the mobo/dvd drive can't use DMA under linux (sorry, haven't got the make/models of them). Before I go out and buy a new motherboard/DVD drive, could the fault be anywhere else? Do I need to compile anything into the kernel perhaps? If your bying new hardware you shouldnt need to set IRQ's, DMA's or ioports's. Most pci and agp cards self configure so unless you still have a isa card youll be fine. Here's a neat way to trash your Debian installation. Use dselect to install and uninstall a few packages, when dselect warns you that you're about to uninstall the ncurses library just hit the return key (default answer is 'y'). Works a treat! :o( (I've also just realised that XFree86 is a pun on X386 - groan, never mind, I'll just keep banging the rocks together). Thanx girls/guys ill try it out with a second hard drive. Using the NT bootloader seems abit piontless and harder then lilo sorry if there's nothing wrong with using lilo on the win2000 mbr then itll do that and install debian or Mandrake on my second hard drive. Maybe it was the hurd that has a problem witht booting from the second ide controller... wouldnt supprise me as it cant support over 2Gb hard disc partitions, ill try installing that on the second one as well just for fun =). Ill tell you how i get on. Not sure what your problem is but I suggest you enter the SCSI BIOS at boot-up and carry out a complete low-level format of the disk from there (and verification / re-mapping of faulty sectors) if you have the time. Then re-try your installation. BTW, I always do this before a new installation in case any new bad sectors have turned up. Well if you recompile your kernel and leave in only the devices that are needed + turn on the arch optimizations you should be able to see the difference. I know i can on my laptop when i fiddle around with the kernel options anoth ;).But on my laptop i find kde and gnome to slow any way(iceWM is the only way unless showing ppl that linux is user freindly). Window decorations, desktop backgrounds, ... do make a differnence as well but most of it is down to ram size and what your trying to fit in there i think. Ive always found debian to run very cuclutered and things like SuSe, Mandrake(9.0 seemed better then 8.*) to be bloated. Ive looked around, but can find only mentions of the "Audigy" (original). If this is out of the question, does any-one know of a soundcard which has Wavetables, MIDI and Sythesiser support under linux. Linux replacement for NetMeeting

Hi, I do not see my brother much. As he has recently brought himself his first computer I am getting him a webcam for Christmas. I would therefore like to get my PC set up and ready for the expected excited phone call and our proposed live video linkup on Christmas Day - sorry guys but this project's deadline is not negotiable ;-) My brother (who is very new to computers) will be using the webcam bundled "Microsoft NetMeeting" on his Windows only PC at his end. Will I have to also boot into Windows and use NetMeeting my end or is there a Linux equivalent (I run Debian 3.0) I can use? I also have a more computer literate friend who lives some distance away from me who runs Linux like myself. Is there a NetMeeting type program (even if it is not compatible with NetMeeting itself) which two remote Linux users can use to videoconference over the net? TIA, Ian.

RH 7.3 Install

Hi Guys, After downloading RH7.3 and conducted a linux mediacheck when at partitioning stage I receive the following error "Partition table on device sda was unreadable. Initialize this drive Yes/No." By selecting Yes the following error occured "no valid devices were found to create new filesystems". Thus the system kills sessions and reboots. By checking system messages (ctrl+alt+F4) at various points I can determine that the SCSI card and devices where detected. Though after receiving the final error messege the following system message appears a number of time "parity error detected in data-in phase". Please bear in mind this machine has been running SuSe without any difficulties. Machine Spec: Supermicro P6SBU 196MB Onboard AIC-7890 SCSI ULTRA2/LVD Seagate 9GB LVD Any help would be great as I am trying to learn this sh*t. Gentoo questions..

Hi Folks After installing RH8.0 over the weekend and getting really (and I mean *really) **** off with yet another compiler producing broken binaries, I think it's about time to look at another linux base. Some questions for the Gentoo experts (cos gentoo.org times out on me). Do I need an existing linux install as I would with Linux From Scratch ? What compiler does it use ? Does the gentoo CD come with sources for useable desktop environments such as KDE ? How long would it take to build a working system (complete with X and KDE) on a Duron 800MHz box ? Regards, Paul.

If it was another packaging system you were looking for, as opposed to specifically wanting to install Gentoo, why not have a look at Slackware? Slackware specific packages install with pkgtool, every thing else is compled from source, (usually, > ./configure >make >make intall). Some find it difficult to begin with, but if I can manage to get it up and running, I'm sure that the vast majority of those subscribing to this list, can have a working installation in a shorter time than it takes me! -- John Seago

Gnome2 - Speed and Application Menu

Earlier today I found some Gnome 2 packages for Debian woody so I have now installed them. The first thing I notices is that Gnome 2 bucks the trend of later versions of software to be slower than their predecessors - Gnome 2 is noticably faster than Gnome 1.4. Then I discovered an interesting little problem. On my desktop machine all works correctly, but on my portable some of the items from the menu that pops up from the Gnome foot are missing, mostly those in the "Desktop Preferences" and "System Tools" categories. As both machine were configured with the same packages this seems very strange. Does anyone know where the config file and/or directory tree is for those menus in Gnome2 ?

One of the major setbacks to introducing Linux is the 'lack of familiarity'. I spend my whole life rebuilding things that have been anihilated through an out of date key stroke or two or the associated hardware reconfiguration fist. One unwritten law of programs is however backward compatibility and while new releases should tend towards the accepted norms (How can we get Linux to blue screen regularly and then annex the toaster?) there should always be a 'dark age please' option for those of us who lived in them unless there is a REAL reason not to have one. Even the configuration tools should be user configurable! If there isnt one in Gnome2 think how you can use your old key setting and share that or have a polite pop at someone in the developers list. It's a new package, so you'll have to get it from sid, but since it largely just bundles the mozilla plugin I'd expect it to be okay. I'm having problems viewing sites with Shockwave Flash graphics using Mozilla 1.0 running on a Debian Woody base. I've downloaded the latest Linux version for the Macromedia site and installed it in ~$HOME/.mozilla/plugins but Mozilla just locks up when I try and load a .swf file. >From what I've read it seems that this is a known problem. What is the best way to perform large downloads?

Hi folks, I am having hassle downloading a 700MB ISO image. I tried last night and the download finished after retrieving only 490MB saying "Download Complete". I tried again this morning and it finished after retrieving only 331MB, again reporting "Download Complete". Firstly I am confused as to why both downloads finished prematurely without giving any error messages, but, secondly, I was wondering if there is a better way anyone could recommend to download this large file rather than simply clicking on it on the web page and letting Mozilla automatically handle the ftp download process as I do at present? Are there any tips and techniques more experienced ALUGers would like to share to help me download this large file successfully? Thanks, Ian. PS: Background info in case it is relevant: My PC is running Debian 3.0 with over 5GB free disk space and I am downloading over a dedicated 128kB NTL broadband link.

OK, I think that my previous problems were due to /home/ricardo not having the correct permissions. What is the easiest way to set up a shared dir on a linux box? where should I put it... in /home/ or /usr/share/ . If I want it available for all users to read/write to, what permissions do I need? They shouldn't need to execute programs from it, but must be able to play .avi and .mp3s from it. This dir should be available to local users running linux, as well as Windoze users over the network. That was the problem. I was so keenly observing the adage of "do not take the name of root in vain" that I had overlooked the need to be root to do serious stuff to the system. I managed to get there by myself at just about the time that you posted. I am using the new partition to creat a Linux from Scratch system. Has anyone experience of this? Dave Crease

Hi list Idiotic question of the day. I'm trying to install debian woody onto a compaq proliant 1600, but it is falling over at the first stage of trying to recognise the hard drive. Compaq has an embedded scsi hard disk controller, which the install can't detect. Do I need to install modules from a floppy to take care of this? Thanks, Jen.

modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module char-major-6

I'm getting this message when I boot my system. I think device char-major-6 is a printer attached via the parallel port (Is this correct?), which I don't have, mine is attached via USB and works fine. I presume modprobe is looking for a module and not finding it, I've read up on modprobe, et. al. but am none the wiser. Just as an aside I've recently rebuilt the kernel and decided to have everything built in rather than as modules. The configuration is specific to my system (single user, dial-up networking only) and the kernel is small enough that having bits of the kernel as loadable modules doesn't give me much. Is this a problem or can I safely ignore it? Being somewhat anally retentive it irks me that it's appearing, can I get rid of the message and how? Regards, Keith ____________ TWICE, adv. Hello, I've been running a dual boot system (Win98 & Linux RedHat) for a couple of years. The system has a single hdd of 30Gb which I partitioned using FIPS when I installed Linux. I created two partitions for the Linux, one small for boot and one other, totalling about 5Gb. The Windows partition has never used more than 7 of the 25ish Gb allocated to it and I thought it would be a good idea to claim more for Linux use. Accordingly I ran FIPS this afternoon and created another 5Gb partition. Everything seems to function well with the original Windows and Linux partitions but when I tried to run cfdisk in Linux to format the new partition I got a fatal error. I tried fdisk and got something similar. They were unable to open hda. A careful re-reading of the FIPS documentation drew my attention to the following sentence :- "If you want to use the new partition under Linux, you may now change the system indicator byte with Linux' fdisk, then use MKFS." Clearly I cannot do that since fdisk and his brother will not run. Can I change the system indicator byte by editing a file, and if so will this get (c)fdisk working? Is there another route to formatting and pressing the new partition into service? Have I missed something very elementary? Should I go back to the abacus and master that before playing with big boys toys? On another but obviously not unrelated matter. I am very much in favour of some form of structured introduction to Linux and its many facets as proposed in recent communications to this list. I say that as one who is not an IT professional but a casual user. I am strongly attracted to the Free Software movement on philosophical grounds and because it provides an alternative to the highly unpalatable antics of the major players in the SOHO* industry. The rapid development of Linux is both exciting and overwhelming for people such as myself, and I suspect that it is people such as myself who will need to feel that Linux is not only a good thing but a straight forward thing to use, before it provides a major challenge to the present giants of the industry. But more of than anon if anyone wishes to pursue the matter with a mere foot soldier. The important thing is my poor marooned partition.
