How do I low level format a hard disk?

Hi Folks, I was happily using my dual-boot Windows/Linux hard disk this morning when the PC suddenly locked up. If I now try to boot it I get the error message "Missing Operating System". If I boot from a Knoppix CD and do fdisk the confused entries in my partition table suggest my hard disk is about 70GB (when it is actually only 6GB). I am not sure what Linux repair tools would be any use, but if I run my Windows Norton's Utilities Disk Doctor program from CD it instantly comes back saying "Norton Disk Doctor cannot continue testing this disk. Only a low-level format will correct the error found". Searching back through my brain I seem to recall that many years ago I performed a low-level format on a hard disk using a facility within the PC's BIOS but cannot find this facility on my current PC (Compaq Deskpro 4000). Is anyone aware of any Linux progs which will perform a low level format of a hard disk? Thanks, Ian. PS: Don't know if it is relevant but the hard disk is a Quantum Fireball CR64A013

Digital Camera

I want to buy and inexpensive digital camera from which I can capture pictures on my PC via USB. 2 megapixels will do me but of course I want it to be linux friendly. Any recommendations? Ian P.S At a pinch, transferring images via flash memory would be OK too.

Tristan, I have just printed off a map for having Freethorpe as the broadcast centre. I think within 2.5 miles should be easy enough to do (bit of hardware cost involved for each thou). It would then cover: Beighton Halvergate Freethorpe Cantley Reedham I suspect within this area we should be able to get enough interest to make it viable. We can always have a line bigger than a meg put in here, although to be honest most people will be happy to have a perminant connection let alone more bandwidth, I know I would be, I have even looked at 64kbps leased lines, I want it more for the IP and the hosting stuff at home more than anything. If we just do the maths quickly. 1mb = 1024kb 1024 / 64 (the minium people would want) = 16 16 / 8000 (yearly cost) = 41.67per month To get down to the 64Kbps all people would have to be connected at once, BT have a 50:1 contention ratio on 512kbp ADSL pipes in a worst case this means people will only get 20Kbps so maybe we should let a couple more in?? Great new plans for alug library afoot!

Hullo All, Adam, Kirsty and I have agreed to share the job of setting up and running the alug library. We are hoping that one or the other of us can take the books to each meeting for members to browse through and borrow. We will even keep overdue fines low - say, two chocolate biscuits per book per week late? ;-) Our first job will be to try and gather together all the books we currently have, then have a think about how to get some more donations or freebies. Any ideas please mail us offlist, and if anyone currently has any alug books, could they do the same so we can start catalogueing them? I hold my hands up to having had Cathedral and Bazaar for at least three months, that is about ten packets of chocolate hobnobs I need to bring to the next meeting by now. Whilst I'm here: I'm currently working on some extremely exciting stuff here at work, and spend all day doing R&D with linux. It occurred to me recently that two years ago I was doing a very different job using very different software, and although I still ask ridiculous questions from time to time of the list, I would like to thank everyone for the help I got when I first joined and my ridiculous questions averaged three a day - your help and patient answers have stood me in good stead. I don't suppose anyone knows of a program that can put icons on the desktop pls? I'm using fluxbox, and although I've seen nautilus working with it, I'm not a fan. It's a bit too...I dunno...clunky? I haven't been able to google anything (which I'm ashamed at ::grin::) and I've been racking my brain, but I don't think I've ever heard of anything apart from nautilus that will do it (well, apart from kde, but I don't fancy hacking the code out ::grin::) cheers, BenE

To Fellow ALUGers, I would like to make an appeal to all of you without broadband in the area, how would you feel about setting up a wireless wan (they are doing it all over the country and in other regions (Suffolk, Cambridge)). As I live in the middle of no where I am not commercially viable, but I believe with the power of the penguin I can jump onto someone else's wireless network, with their permission and do things that way. A colleague has just pointed me in the direction of the IBM DeveloperWorks site <www.ibm.com/developerworks>. They have a number of areas which they call "Technology Zones" one of which is Linux, if you go to a zone and then select Education from the left hand menu there are a number of tutorials that look interesting e.g. Introduction to XFree86 4.X, Configuring TCP/IP under Linux, Backing up your Linux machines, CVS for the developer or amateur, Getting to know GRUB, Compiling and installing software from sources, to name but a few. You can view them online or download zipped HTML or a PDF. You'll need to register (but what the heck, on the internet no one know you're a dog ;-) ) I've skimmed through a couple and my 1st impression is that they're useful introductory material but tend to lack a bit of detail. In last year's UK Networking Industry Awards, of which I'm one of the judges, one of the entries was an educational establishment that was very proud of its new wireless LAN installation. We stood in the middle of the NEC identifying literally dozens of insecure servers on this thing, because the vast majority of exhibitors didn't have security turned on in their wireless installations. Not a problem at a trade show, you'd think, but you must remember that many stands have phone/ISDN links back to the main office, thus giving any old muppet with (in our case) an iPaq and a few hundred quid's worth of software a really nice route into their corporate networks. Absolutely correct. Ionica launched back in the mid 1990s, when I was tech ed of Network Week. From day one we were basically writing things like "Neat idea, but the guy running it sounds like a cowboy and they've forgotten to do any marketing". When we asked Ionica whether we could have anything more than a phone line - ISDN, for instance - the answer was always that the current equipment, running in the current radio spectrum (2.4GHz, I believe it was), couldn't handle it but when the new version came out (11GHz or so, if memory serves) we could have anything we wanted. To say that you can't do 128Kbit/sec ISDN in a 2.4GHz spectrum is, of course, nonsense - if nothing else you could mux it like cellular providers do with multiples of 9.6Kbit/sec channels in GPRS. It may have been fair to say that the kit wasn't up to it, but I can't imagine the equipment vendors didn't have an upgrade roadmap. Interestingly, the Ionica service - where it was available - was excellent by all accounts. You could have multiple numbers with a different ring pattern for each (so dad could have a different ring pattern from mum), caller ID, a 1471 equivalent, and so on - they did all of this long before BT. And the coverage area was okay, if not massive. From what I can see, they just didn't spend the marketing bucks, and got a reputation in the press for being a bunch of wide boys trying to take investors for a ride. In fact there's still an Ionica receiver dish on a house up the road from me - maybe they're hoping the service will come back one day!! Regards, Dave C

I have just started playing with wireless stuff at work and it's great to be able to wander around with a laptop my boss loves it. I work at Framingham Earl High School As the Network Mangler and would love to help out if I can. We have a 2mbit DSL connection going unused during the evening. This would be fine for general web surfing but there are a number of restrictions that you need to be made aware of. If anyone wants to experiment let me know. Depends, what's Mandrake 9s default kernel? if its in the 2.4.x series then there is no spoon^Wipchains unless they're being very silly. iptables may be available. Certainly on debian systems unless you let it actually install stuff on the initial setup you have to install the ipchains/iptables packages, so, maybe you managed to do a minimal install of Mandrake... Anyways - just my thoughts at this silly time of night. Brett.

Newbi problems

Hi I wonder if any of you gentlemen or ladies can help. I'm a new user and by new I mean new. I installed Mandrake 9 on Friday (14th Feb 2003), after weeks of having nothing but problems frow my Windows system. So far (Only two days I know) I've had no problems, except one. I seem unable to access my floppy disk or either of my two CDROM drives, I know their there, I formatted a floppy disk and saved some files there. On trying to retrieve them i was told I "Do not have permission to access the files" or something along those lines. On opening the Home directory and going through the files to arrive at the /mnt folder, I was again told that I had not the relevent permission to access my files, looking at the floppy properties, I saw the 'owner' and 'group' listed at "root" Logging in as root, giving the password I entered at install, I was told again .......well you get the idea. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I need to edit the file and do not wish to re type the whole thing. If it helps my system is a Packard Bell Club 600 with a Celeron 600hz CPU, 1 DVD/CDROM, 1 CD writer, 128mb ram, 13GB HHD, solely for Linux. On board graphica and sound. Alistair

FTP vs. HTTP is your classic "Horses for courses" discussion - one is better than t'other for some situations, and not as good for others. For example, HTTP is great if: 1. You want to let people download single files via hyperlinks on a Web page. An HTTP link is just a link to a file, which when clicked will make the browser download it. 2. You want the client browser to open the file (e.g. a PDF or Word doc) either via a plug-in or an external application. HTTP stamps each file (or each section within a multipart download) with a MIME type, which the browser can use intelligently. So if my Internet Explorer or Netscape spots that it's a PDF document from the MIME type, it launches the Adobe Acrobat Reader plug-in. If it sees a Bloggit document and doesn't have a Bloggit plug-in, it simply launches the application under Windows and passes the filename to it for opening. This is much harder to do with FTP - it basically depends on the client machine being able to use the file extension (e.g. .PDF, .DOC) to map it to an application. 3. You have a Web server and you don't want to muck about setting up FTP. Many machines come with HTTP set up out of the box but not FTP. And if you want to set up anonymous FTP you have to be dead careful you don't open all manner of security holes. 4. People using your site have firewalls that have a hard time with FTP connections. Most of us understand that sometimes you have to switch your FTP client to Passive mode if you're behind a firewall, but many people I speak to (i.e. who say "I can't FTP this file") don't realise this, which can be a pain. FTP is great if: 1. You want to download multiple files. There's nothing quite like an "mget *" to make life easy when you're downloading (say) the 15 patches for your kernel that have come out since you last patched it. 2. You want to allow people to upload files. You can use HTTP's PUT command, but it's nothing like as easy to work with as an FTP PUT. 3. You want to enforce access control depending on user ID & password. Although you can do access control with an HTTP server, it's far from elegant in most cases, particularly if you want it to integrate with the user database (or global directory service) on the server computer. FTP servers, on the other hand, tend to be easier to fly in this respect, and generally integrate much more tightly to the OS's user database than would be the case with an HTTP server. I'm not saying you can't do it with HTTP, just that it's not as elegant in the average case. 4. Your clients have intelligent FTP clients. Ever tried FTPing from (say) a Red Hat 7.2 box to another Red Hat 7.2 box? Do an "mget *" and the server will tar and gzip all the files into a single compressed archive, then send over that single archive; the FTP client will unbundle everything and leave you with a file structure like the one it started with at the other end, but with a far more efficient transfer in the middle than would have been the case with numerous files (particularly if the files were small). At the end of the day, there's not a lot you can' t do with FTP that you can't emulate with HTTP, and vice versa. For most of what we all do, I suspect that HTTP will outnumber FTP in the majority of cases, because we don't do anything particularly complex in most of our sites. The only situation where I use FTP on my servers, for instance, is where people rent space on my server for their home pages, and they use FTP to upload the pages. Everywhere else I use HTTP, mainly because MIME typing lets the client browser be clever about what it does with documents. D.

Mono monitor and xd640

Hi I'm trying to use a b+w monitor with the new xd640 desktop. This desktop uses the fvwm2 window manager and is built with FLTK. I was using an X configuration with 1bpp as the default colour depth which is OK for fvwm2, but not for FLTK. I now have set the colour depth to 4bpp, but need to change the colour assignments in fvwm2rc so that I can see what is going on. I think that I can use a greyscale palette, or shades of grey/black and white. I know that white is rgb:ffff/ffff/ffff and black rgb:0/0/0, but does anyone know where I'd get info on shades of grey and how to set them? I've had a look around the man pages at setpalette etc but this doesn't seem to have what I'm looking for. thanks Glen

Hard Disk Problems

Hi, When I booted my PC this morning it would not start XWindows. If I look in /dev I can see null as -rw-r--r-- If I look in / I can see /proc as dr-xr-xr-x Question: Can the above errors be fixed manually or is it reinstall time? I am running Knoppix 3.1 (installed on my hard disk rather than running off a CD) Ian.

Grateful thanks to MJR and Steve for pointing me in the right direction over my DOS <-> Linux ethernet link. After some Googling, I found something called XFS for DOS V1.86, which appears to provide the DOS end of NFS, so presumably if I can get that to work then I can use NFS at the Linux end. XFS seems quite old (c. 1994) and the documentation leaves a huge amount to be desired, but if it does the job, I suppose I can't complain! For now, I'm trying desperately hard to learn about networking on the Linux end. (Not trivial for a Bear of Little Brain....) The plan is to get the two machines to respond to the 'ping' function first and then (hopefully) progress from there. If anyone's interested, I could report back when I've finally got it to go. The virtual screen can be a different resolution and different colour depth than the real one. Steve.

Hard disks - how to tell if one (which one) is about to fail?

Over the last day or so I have found that occasionaly things wait for disk I/O longer than I would normally expect and before the data is returned there is a noticable click coming from one (or both) of the hard disks, presumably as the head is retruned to track 0. Sometimes this click goes hand in hand with a kernel message like: hdb: timeout waiting for DMA ide_dmaproc: chipset supported ide_dma_timeout func only: 14 Sometimes the above messages are acompanied by one saying the kernel has reset the IDE bus and sometimes there is no message from the kernel at all sugesting that the drive itself is attempting some kind of recovery. I am guessing from this that one of the disks is on its way out, but the question is which one? The hdb mentioned above isn't a guide as the kernel also logs DMA timeouts for hda too. When booting the BIOS reports both drives as S.M.A.R.T. capable and status OK so I tied installing some Linux S.M.A.R.T software - smartsuite. Linux & DOS peer-to-peer network

Dear List, Please could anyone shed light on this for me? I have two PCs, one a dual-boot Linux/DOS Athlon and one a DOS-only 586. When both are running DOS, I use Invisible-LAN to connect them so that I can transfer files quickly and easily via their Ethernet adapters (one 3Com 3C509 and one with DEC 21041 chip, connected via UTP). I can't find anything that will enable me to connect them when one is running DOS and the other is running Linux (Slack 8.1, 2.4.18). I can't get Invisible-LAN to run in DOSEMU, either, so I seem to be stuck. Can anyone suggest what I could run at the DOS end and what to do at the Linux end so that both will talk to each other on the Ethernet? Thanks in advance! Gerald.

IMAP problems with Kmail

Hi Folks, I store all my incoming email on my home network's central mail server. When in my Living Room I read this email via Kmail on my laptop using IMAP. Unfortunately, recently, when starting Kmail it occasionally throws up an error message saying: "Error: The process for imap://hedgehog.noahsark.the-zub.net died unexpectedly" followed immediately by an error message saying: "The application KMail crashed and caused a signal 11 SIGSEGV. An application mostly receives the SIGSEGV signal due to a bug in the application. The application was asked to save its documents. Starting backtrace... No debugging symbols found" Arrrggghhh! memories of the Blue Screen Of Death coming flooding back from my experiences with another operating system! My laptop is quite old and slow (100MHz) and takes 1 minute 49 seconds to start up Kmail once the kmail icon has been clicked and I have noticed that this error occurs most frequently when I run the laptop using it's battery where it runs slightly (but noticeably) slower than when running off the mains power pack. I am therefore wondering if I have hit some kind of handshake timeout problem during the Kmail startup process. Do I, for example, need to somewhere extend a timeout period variable relating to the response time between Kmail and the IMAP server while the laptops processor is busy thrashing around trying to start Kmail? Has anyone else come across this error or can suggest a way to get round it? As a temporary fix I have started using Sylpheed (which I am growing to like) but Eye kneed aye spell chequer. Ian.

My Mozilla no longer does DNS lookups

Hi Folks, My Mozilla browser has suddenly, for no apparent reason, stopped doing DNS lookups. I was using Mozilla quite happily doing some web browsing yesterday evening then temporarily exited it to check my emails using Kmail. I then restarted Mozilla and, frustratingly, discovered that I could no longer browse the web with it. Every time I type in a URL it immediately comes back saying page not found. If however I do a ping to suss out the websites IP Address and type this IP Address directly into Mozilla then it finds the webpage and loads it ok. The problem still exists this morning, even though I have rebooted my PC several times in the mean time. I can of course still check my emails and ping using URLs, I can even use the Opera browser without problems; it is just the DNS lookup part of Mozilla which has stopped working. Has anyone else come across this problem? If so how did you solve it? Confused and bewildered... Ian.

chroot jail for ftp

Hi, I'm setting up an ftp server that I wanted to run in a chroot jail. I've created /home/ftp and created the basic etc, bin, lib, pub, dev, usr directory structure with the necessary files and correct permissions on them. Now what I'm unsure of is how I tell ftp that is where it has to run from. Do I need to modify the inetd.conf line ftp stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd /usr/sbin/in.ftpd to something like ftp stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd /home/ftp/usr/sbin/in.ftpd Then create the sbin directory in /home/ftp/usr and copy in the in.ftpd program? Or do I leave inetd.conf as it is and create a wrapper script. If anyone has any experience of setting ftp up in a chroot jail, I'd be grateful of any pointers to web sites, or hints..the info I've found is always somehow missing parts I need to know. nfs connection - CD umount problem/ WMs /Booting CDs

Now that I have a working crossover connection between two computers everything is great, the client can see the CDRom and Home directory of the server and install etc works fine. The only difficulty that I seem to have is getting the CDRom to unmount from the server. I boot the server and mount the cd, then mount the nfs directory on the client, transfer required files and unmount the nfs. If I want to change CD then I have to umount it to open the draw, but unmount always replies with 'device is busy'. The man page suggest 'a lazy unmount - "umount -l /mnt/cdrom" gets round this, but it still doesn't allow me to open the draw. Forcing it causes complaints. I had a look at Top to see what is running but cant find the cultprit there - anyone know what is likely to cause this problem and how to fix it? Also did anyone get the WindowManagers to compile from this months LXF cover CD? I have tried fluxbox and IceWm, but neither got through make - fluxbox with a 'memory exhausted' message and IceWm with a huge list of warnings and errors about the taskbar etc. I was only looking for a lighter manager than XFce..... On the subject of bootable CD linux's I was impressed with the Knoppix based Freeduc one - it is in French by default but press F2 on boot and you can choose anyone of about 10 languages - including English. Shouldn't give the CS students too much difficulty. Glen .....from Britains most remote inhabited island......

A belated hello world!

As always, I've got ahead of myself. Posting to a mailing list before introducing myself... Sorry ;-) Anyway, I'm allegedly an IT professional (hehe), mainly dealing in enterprise java developments. I've had an interest in GNU/Linux mainly Debian for a couple of years, and have installed and run it on many different boxes. i386 (SMP), laptops, powerpc, sparc, sparc64. I've mainly used it as a personal OS, not much server related stuff apart from the usual home network with the usual diald, nfs, samba, apache, php, python etc...... I have a passing interest in the BSD's (sorry) and am getting to know OpenBSD at the moment. Not sure if I can be of much help to many people, but I'll stick my oar in when I can. Im just wondering what my opptions are for live linux cd's(Bootable Linux with no install required). I know about knoppix and SuSe(is there a redistribution problem with the lissesnce of this one?) but are there others? I know alot of people who wana try Linux but dont want to install, and they call themselfs C.S. students, pa! ;) Oh thers also one dedicated to playing frozzen bubble allthogh its abit poo. Journalling Filesystems

when I installed Debian Woody I set up my root partition as ext3. I've been running with it for several months now and it seems to work well. 1) does anyone else use ext3 and, if so, what do you think of it? 2) are there any caveats regarding the use of ext3? (apart from making sure that ext3 support is in the kernel) 3) I'm thinking of converting my existing ext2 partitions to ext3, are there any circumstances where is isn't worth doing this? 4) what about other journalling fs's (ReiserFS or XFS for example), are they any better? and how hard is it to convert from ext2 to one of them? Wheel Mices

My old faithful wheel mouse gave out last weekend so I had to get a new one. The old one cost me all of GBP 1.50 at a local computer fair 3 years ago so it didn't owe me anything. I decided to be a bit less of a cheapskate this time and bought a 'more reputable' brand (wonder how long this one will last :o) ). Main problem is this one is so sensitive to the slightest movement compared to my old one. I've found out how to adjust this with the Gnome Control Centre but there doesn't seem to be anything relating to the sensitivity of the wheel. So instead of scrolling one or two lines my displays jump half a page or so at the slightest movement. Anyone know of any generic way to adjust this or do I have to review the key bindings for each app? Keith

kernel compile via rescue disk?

At the moment I have a Debian installation on a disk that is going to be moved onto a new motherboard, which has an entirely new chipset. This chipset is supported in 2.4.20, but not in 2.4.18 which is what I am running currently. The 2.4.20 sources are in /usr/src, but the need to be unpacked and recompiled. Sadly, the pc (for whatever reason) won't stay working for long enough for a compile and make-kpkg. Would it be possible for me to use a rescue disk, chroot into the existing installation (by mounting the / , /usr and /home partitions, /swap is on a different hd which I am also moving to the new mobo), run the compile from there, use dpkg to install, reset LILO, then exit? I have a feeling it *should* be possible, but I have sneaky suspicions there will be odd problems... I expect to do the following (partition names aren't exact, but you get the idea- & commans cribbed from gentoo install docs): # Mounting swap swapon /dev/hdb5 # Make directories to mount existing partitions onto mkdir /mnt/debian mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/debian mkdir /mnt/debian/usr mount /dev/hda3 /mnt/debian/usr mkdir /mnt/debian/home mount /dev/hda5 /mnt/debian/home cd /mnt/debian # Not sure why I should do this.... mount -o bind /proc /mnt/debian/proc #Actually chroot into it.... chroot /mnt/debian /bin/bash The problem I can see is whether I will be able to find the paths to gcc, dpkg, make-kpkg etc... Can anyone suggest anything I may have missed? TIA

Hi all, I'm going to publish this just as soon as we have the remaining dates, unless someone objects. Improvements are welcome. Note that the first Norwich discussion meeting has been pencilled in for next Sunday -- who's going to be there? Many thanks to the venue organisers (Rob, John, James) for agreeing to dates so far ahead... hopefully we can get them into all the magazines, local papers, etc and won't have to vary them too much. The extra advance warning should help with promotion and attendances, too. In other news, Peterborough LUG's meeting is this Thursday evening. They're having an "open forum" session, much like most of last year's ALUG meetings. Anyone from A47 or A17ish wanting a lift there and back, email me. --- Begin draft: The Anglian Linux User Group needs speakers and presentations! We're interested to hear from anyone who wants to speak about a project they're involved in, or some other aspect of GNU and Linux that is of interest to the rest of ALUG. It's hoped that we can have two types of talk at each venue: the first sort is an introductory type of talk, covering such things as what a piece of software or a project is, what it does, how to install it and get started using it, and so on; the second is a more "in-depth" technical talk aimed at "veteran" users who are interested in how things work and how to improve them. If there is interest, displays may also be offered for the time between talks, when practical help will also be available. The venues have different facilities, including projection equipment, microphones and stages, so please wait for your talk's venue to be decided before preparing that multimedia extravaganza. It is expected that most talks will happen at the Syleham and Elmswell meetings, while the Norwich meetings will be more social discussions. The group is also always interested to hear from people with venues available for ALUG, especially in North Norfolk or Cambridgeshire. Checking the integrity of a CD

Hi, I have recently obtained a set of CDs from a friend and would like to check their integrity against the md5 ISO checksum I have obtained from the original supplier in order to reassure myself that no errors were introduced during the burning process. Is it possible to directly check the md5 checksum of a ready made CD or do I need to use CD burner software to create an ISO image of it first and then checksum that? Ian.

Debian upgrade but only a few packages =)

I just want to upgrade autoconf and automake, ive got autoconf 1.4 and need 1.6. I dont want to break the packageing system so id like to upgrade via apt(well dselect but same backend) but i only want these packages and any that they require i dont want to complety upgrade everything though. I also want to upgrade to kde3.1 any1 know if its stable or what line i should add to /etc/apt/sources.list and where? Above all others or below them. cross-over connection and nfs install

Although I have no networking experience I'm trying to connect two pc's using an RJ45 cable and two 10baseT cards (one Com3, one SMC). This is so that I can effect an NFS install on the one box which doesn't have a CDROM drive. I'm installing slackware 8.1, and although both NIC's appear to function OK, and I can ping the local box from either, I can get no communication between them. Neither box can ping the other and attempts to set up the nfs install always result in the 'rpc.portmap - unable to recieve' error on the client. I can mount the CDROM as /mnt/nfs on the server. Part of the problem may be that I am using a home-made crossover cable - from a standard A-B cable. I found some instructions for doing this in a HOW-TO where pins 1A is switched to 3B, 2A to 6B and the return similar. However the colour codes on my wire did not match the How-to description, and I'm not sure which is 1 and which is pin8. Colours on mine are brown,blue,yellow,green,red,black,orange,grey - and I've assumed brown is no. 1. Any pointers would be useful . thanks Glen

ata100, DDR RAM etc...

Well, my desktop computer (not the one with the wierd inode set) lasts about 2-20 minutes before locking up (does this in GNU/Linux AND Win2k), and although I'm now runnning memtest86 (it did this about a year ago, and I had to change 1 of my DIMMs from slot 2 to the third slot and it worked), I guess the poor little motherboard et al need to be put into retirement after a few years of (quirky) service. I'm guessing it's a RAM problem- could be CPU or even the video card (not the hd's cos Linux and win2k are on different drives on different ide slots, and I have tried each by removing the other totally from power and ide cable, tried different cables too). But my real question is; does linux now support ATA100? If so, anyone know which kernel? Will I have to add an hdparam line to LILO, or will it detect it autoimatically? I'll be running Debian Woody on it. Also, I shall be buying the new DDR RAM, does linux fully support this too? Also, does it now support the AGP 8x slot as well? (incidentally, memtest86 has been stuck on test 4, however this is a test that should take long compared to the others....) For sale: one grandmother, will swap for new PC.;) lol TIA

It also shared account information with the Calendar server, web server, and proxy server (as well as the NT domain if you wanted it to). All in all a nice setup. By contrast I was forced to use MDaemon running on a Windows 95 box in Holland connected to an ISDN line and hourly dial up (we had just had the half of our company that I worked for sold off to another company - we were an ex-IBM location, they had started life repairing TVs in a warehouse and the company was now a global company and this was the company mail server!!!!). I had to hook into this via an internationally dialed 33.6k modem and use remote control software - which screwed the fact that I had administered the AIX boxes and NT domain from my Linux boot :-( Entering the aliases we had was a nightmare because you couldn't list all the aliases for a given account - euch. When I emailed their technical support I got a reply from the MD saying that they were aware of the limitations and that they planned to address them in the next but one relase - hopfully. To put this new IT infrastructure into context I will add that the IT director we now had wanted us to ditch our Token Ring network and put Ethernet in so that we could use TCP/IP (doh!) and he also received a fax of a hoax virus email, which he then typed out and emailed to me with the request that I emailed it to managers company wide. When I queried it I was told to go ahead and do it and only managed not to (it would have originated from my email for petes sake!) because I couldn't get a list of all the managers emails because nobody new them! I left soon after this funnily enough because I was labelled as 'at risk' in a company trim down (i.e. if I hadn't jumped and not enough people had jumped I may have been pushed). I was one of two domain admins, and the only mail and calendar server admin (no backup) and the Internet and Intranet webmaster (no backup) and had designed the in house call logging system (not yet finished or documented) - so you can see there would be no significant hole if I dissapeared. Hidden agendas included getting rid of the calendar and Intranet functions and the IT director regaining control of the web site (which he did in Word) and mail server (which he did when he was in Holland!) - so I guess I was definately expendable! How did I get on to this? Sure enough after a few minutes of use the voltage dropped of noticeably just before the system crashed, however this still happened after swapping the power supply. In my case turned out to be my SCSI II drive, (but it looks like you've covered that one from what you say) after a few minutes of use it was doing silly things to the voltages. Sorry bout the title, just couldn't help myself. Anyway. After doing an emerge -u system, the pc froze totally and so I had to hard reset. Sadly, on startup I get this message: Unexpected inconsistency, please run fsck on hda3 manually. inode 161 has imagic flag set. This is fine and dandy, I could get tomsrtbt on the case, but in fact, I have no idea what the imagic flag is, nor what it's meant to be. Interestingly, /dev/hda3 is the root filesystem I'm typing this e-mail on, so it ain't all that bad... is it? I use fsck 1.29 and ext2 as my filesystem.

man page format problems

Another problem with the gentoo system upgrade (or destruction, depending on the way you look at it) is that now man pages are formatted incorrectly. They look like this: (from man man): ESC[1mSynopsisESC[om and so on... lots of ESC's and I presume control characters. Obviously this is a bug, but I don't know who's bug it is- would it be the man programs or some other program that formats it to display?

Anyone know of a q3 install howto just i dont want to get another copy just for Linux well if the company theat made the boxset were still around i might but as there not, pa =). What deal are NTL doing at the moment then? ive been thinking about geting it but was wondering if i need a bt phone line installed at the address, dont see why its needed but most broadband companys have it as a requirment i just want cable or ADSL not a phone line. Webcams

Just a quick update on the freebie webcam that NTL are giving out at the moment. After a snotty phone call on Tuesday, one was delivered the same afternoon. After getting the USB drivers loaded (enabling the BIOS stuff first), I grabbed a driver from http://qce-ga.sourceforge.net/ - A very quick compile produced a kernel module of about 100K, and with a little work with the strip command this could probably be reduced to around 70K. "make install" does not copy the module across correctly - Mine ended up in /lib/modules/misc instead of /lib/modules/2.4.18/misc. With usbcore, videodev, usb-uhci, and mod_quickcam loaded in that order, "xawtv -c /dev/video0" produced a full colour image at approx 1fps. Downloaded gqcam, but found the image monochromatic with a distinct blue bias. All in all, quite a simple device to set up and use (not sure what for though). As you say it's a PCI modem I assume its internal, is it a so-called WinModem?, cause if so then you may have a problem. Hello, I had been meaning to join alug for a while, but only just got round to it. Am interested in learning more about the O/S, although I first installed RH4.2 back in 98, I have been quite intermittant about developing my knowleadge, I would also like to pass on any of the small amount of knowledge I have to anyone who might need any assistance. I work in IT although unfortunatly not looking after any unices, but the bit mapped dungeon itself! Anyway thats it really. Toby

I'm about two steps from abandoning my SuSE linux install to my whizzy linuxfromscratch setup but I've hit a dead end. Exim just won't deliver mail properly... Everytime it gets mail it moans about not being able to get a lock on /var/mail/<whatever> (where I *plan* to store my messages), because of the 'permissions' and defers them. When installing exim I set up an 'exim' user and group and chown/chgrp 'ed /var/mail to that user (and the subdirectories) and in a fit of desparation did a chmod 666 without any success (that is the chmod worked but exim still didn't ::grin::) So....arrrggghhh! I've tried disabling locking altogether with no luck and I'm desperate. Can anyone help me pretty please? Cheers, BenE (also pine moans about /var/mail/<whatever> not being a 'selectable folder'. Exim now works perfectly. Also, the pine problem I thought may have been related (the INBOX folder 'not being selectable') was down to the fact that pine wants it's 'folders' to have a header at the top (oh, and the fact it needs to be a file, rather than a folder...d'oh). Quickly sorted by copying one of the folders it's creates into /var/mail and renaming it. kppp gateway problem

Hi, I normally access the internet via a gateway on my network via my ethernet card, however, I have recently had a few occasions when I needed to temporarily access an alternative ISP using a modem. To keep things simple I thought I would use kppp to setup the dial-up connection. The modem connects to the dial-up ISP ok, establishes a ppp link, and correctly modifies /etc/resolv.conf to point at the dial-up ISP nameservers, however I cannot ping, or reach anything over the link. If I run tcpdump I instead see that the data is still being routed through my ethernet card rather than now going through the modem. i.e: [ian@swan ian]$ ping 80.225.253.50 PING 80.225.253.50 (80.225.253.50) from 192.168.1.232 : 56(84) bytes of data. --- 80.225.253.50 ping statistics --- 90 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100% packet loss If I run netstat I see: [ian@swan ian]$ netstat -rn Kernel IP routing table Destination Gateway Genmask Flags MSS Window irtt Iface 80.225.252.38 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.255 UH 40 0 0 ppp0 192.168.1.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U 40 0 0 eth0 127.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 255.0.0.0 U 40 0 0 lo 0.0.0.0 192.168.1.1 0.0.0.0 UG 40 0 0 eth0 192.168.1.1 is my ethernet network's internet gateway machine. I have set this to "Default Gateway" rather than "Static Gateway" and have also selected "Assign the default route to this gateway". Question: What silly thing am I doing wrong (or have misconfigured) to prevent kppp changing the default gateway route from the ethernet card to the modem? Thanks, Ian.
