We have an afternoon meeting booked for the last sunday in April at the Billy Bluelight again. I don't like the room at the Billy very much - it is dreary and cold and unwelcoming. Does anyone know of a better alternative? Does anyone know of other pubs etc in Norwich with a room to hire at a reasonable price? The room at the Billy is £15 for example. Can anyone here book a room at UEA? Syd

Installing Gentoo 2004.0

I've just downloaded the two ISOs for Gentoo 2004.0. Before I burn them to disc, does anyone know what they contain? Is it source packages or binary packages? And how long is it likely to take to install (from sources) a standard desktop system (X, KDE, OOo) on a Pentium III (512Mb RAM). Presumably I can do it a bit at a time (e.g. compile X first and then KDE in another session). What worries me slightly is that I'm running a laptop and they don't take kindly to be left switched on for long periods of time. Any thoughts would be very much appreciated. Cheers, Richard

Anyone done anything similar, any warnings, im not neccessarily doing it for cost savings, more for the experience. Or would small form factor be the way to go? gentoo and portage

Hi, a question to any gentoo users on the list. I have just installed gentoo 1.4 on my second machine (Cele 333, 256MB PC100) and I'm impressed - using the stage 1 tarball has compiled a pretty nifty OS and KDE desktop compared to the Mandrake/Fedora distros that I've had on there before. The main worry I have is that if I try to emerge-sync I'll be inundated with 1000's of updates and my poor ol' 28.8 connection will be tied up for a week. I've looked at the web site documentation, but there is no suggestion of using anything but portage for updates. I'm guessing that portage just adds a script to the sources (maybe a patch or two), but does anyone know if I can just download the script and patch then use the source that I already have? I'd like to use portage as it seems excellent, but would prefer to be more efficient with my online time.. best wishes Glen

I like quite a few of you who are still here, was at Woodbridge on that Sunday in 1999. Apologies if this has already been said, but most source packages adhere to the following installation procedure. 1. cd to the directory where you have unpacked the source 2. type ./configure this runs the configure script which does a huge bunch of checks to try to make sure the compile will be successful. It should tell you for example if any libraries are missing. It is usually possible to pass arguments to configure to tell it where you want files to be put. configure creates (amongst other things) a makefile which tells the compiler how to build the programme from the source. 3. type ./make this compiles the programme and should result in an exectuable 4 type ./make install this installs the executable and any other necessary files in predetermined directories. Kernel 2.6 again

I now have kernel 2.6.3 source from Debian Testing/Sarge and am still having some problems. The ohci-hcd module is not being loaded automatically and in consequence my mouse doesn't work until the module is loaded with Modprobe. Can anyone tell me what I need to put into /etc/modprobe.d or /etc/modprobe.conf to make the loading automatic? The monthly Norwich 'second thursday' evening social meet will take place next week, 11th March from 8 pm in the 'City Gate' pub, Dereham Road. There may or may not be a penguin on the table :-) === directions etc === The City Gate pub is just off the inner ring road at the junction of Grapes Hill and Barn Road. Dereham Road is the A1074 - take the Costessey junction on the A47 if coming from west of Norwich. Otherwise, when going clockwise around the inner ring road, Dereham road is the left turn at the traffic lights at the bottom of Grapes Hill (but see parking info below). There is a very large Cane Furniture shop on the corner and this is probably the best landmark from either direction. The pub, which has a large glass frontage (see link to picture above), is next to the cane furniture shop. There is ample parking nearby, including possible free parking on the forecourt of a wine warehouse next to the pub or on side roads off Dereham Road. There is also Pay-and-Display parking ( £1.40 for the evening) on the other side of the ring road off St Swithin's road. Coming down Grapes Hill turn right at the lights (St Benedict's Street) and then left into the entrance to the car park which is behind Toys-R-Us. Syd

Mandrake 9.2 ADSL Network

Thanks for all your replies to "Groupware for the Home". I did read them but was switching over to ADSL (lucky me) at the time and the 'switch over' really hasn't finished yet as you'll understand from my plight below! I have gone over to ADSL with Pipex. The Speedtouch 330 USB modem they sent was a nightmare and I tried and tried to get it to work with Linux but to no avail (tried all the drivers and even started installing new distro's!!). Finally I had enough and purchased a modem router - ethernet (http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X…). I had it up and running in 10 minutes and it is a very good, cheap, little gizmo. However now I am using Mandrake 9.2 and I am having connection problems. The modem holds the connection but Mandrake seems to lose the connection to the modem and in order to get things running again I have to enter the command /etc/init.d/network restart - as root. So much so that this command is now a shortcut on my desktop. Can anyone help here please? I went from Suse 8.2 to Fedora to Suse 9.0 to Slackware 9.0 to Mandrake 9.2 over a four day period and I don't think I can stand another re-install. In the customer reviews for the product link above it mentions a firmware upgrade - done it - no difference. I don't think there's any point in e-mailing Pipex as the modem keeps the connection. Could this be a problem with DrakFirewall?? Help please. Rgds, Martin

I picked up a copy of tvtime 0.9.12 and installed it and I get pictures. Unfortunately, I get vertically compressed images with a large green patch underneath. I've read the documentation over and over and I've tried experimenting with all sorts of settings, to no avail. Strangely, though, the captured images are the correct aspect ratio, but still with a large area of green under. debian and kernels and the net

I installed woody last week, and have just gotten round to compiling the 2.4.22 kernel. All was well until I tried to access the net. I can connect OK (using wvdial) but I can't get my mail and moz just times out when trying to load pages. I've tried pinging IP addresses with no luck so It's not my nameservers being wrong or anything. I'm guessing that something is stopping the packets from leaving my 'puter. The lack of blinking lights on my modem would suggest ths, anyhow. the config I used to compile the kernel is the one I have used in all my boxes in the past with no problems (including ones with kernel 2.4.22). I used the vanilla kernel source (ie, taken from the PC format discs rather than apt-getting the source), but I doubt that would make a difference?? And even with my shiny new book, 'google hacks' I still can't anything even remotely related ;) help...please...someone. TIA, BenE

Mouse problems - how to specify a PS/2 mouse?

I had a disaster yesterday with my Win2k system, as a consequence I needed to get my Linux system displaying its X desktop directly as opposed to using the Win2k system's X server (cygwin). I had to run xf86config as I'd never set up X on the system before, it actually went quite smoothly without any serious problems and I had my xfce desktop up and running very easily - apart from a non-working mouse. My problem then was that I didn't know what the entries in the XF86Config file were for different mouse types. The HOWTOs tell you which lines to change for different types of mice etc. but they don't tell you what are the possible valid entries. Where can one find this information? I simply couldn't get a PS/2 mouse set up to work and ended up finding a serial mouse and using that. Does one need to change the link from /dev/mouse to /dev/ttyS0 if using a PS/2 mouse? I worked out that the Protocol setting needed to be PS/2 but still couldn't get it working. -- Chris Green (chris(a)areti.co.uk)

Anyways the problem is this: On my Suse9.0 box whether I get 3D enabled when X starts up seems be a bit random. Sporadically, (more common on an X restart than the first X boot) 3D will be disabled. When this happens I get the following info on /var/log/XFree86.0.log (II) MGA(0): [drm] drmSetBusid failed (9, PCI:1:0:0), Device or resource busy (EE) MGA(0): [drm] DRIScreenInit failed. Disabling DRI. I'm running a matrox G400 card. Another curious aspect of the 3D behaviour is that when it does work, on full screen mode it will change the monitor timings to the point that my monitor will complain their out of range. The monitor will still display, but there is this nasty on-screen-display right in the middle, complaining that the frequency is out of range. Annoyingly there doesn't seem to be way of getting rid of it, so playing a game is a bit tricky. So does anybody know if there is a way of settings the timings for full screen 3D display? xdm, startx etc., what wakes them up?

Another problem I had with my Slackware 9.1 system after running xf86config was that it seemed to doing things 'behind my back' after having configured X. Once I'd configured the XF86Config file I ran startx (I think it was) and up popped my xfce for root (I was still root), great I thought, all is well. However when I rebooted, something somewhere had configured xdm to work for local as well as remote connections. This was (sort of) OK but I'd really prefer it not to happen in the future as:- Most of the time I run my Linux desktop on my WIn2k system using an X server. If/when I log into the Linux box directly it's because something is awry and very often running X automatically will simply get in the way. I want to default to a command line login locally. It uses resources unnecessarily How do you shut down? In the end I CTRL/ALT/F2ed to an alternative console and ran 'shutdown -h now' there but this seems a bit convoluted and as it's not the system console the messages get a bit confused. It meant my mouse problems were worse because gpm had got the mouse configured wrong before X got a look in (or something like that, I haven't really sorted it out yet). -- Chris Green (chris(a)areti.co.uk)

Everything I'm proposing distributing is under GPL or similar license so there's certainly no legal issue with giving away copies. The download facility is a mandrakeclub membership perk, but the software remains free. This is my understanding anyway. Having said which, I do think that people should do the decent thing and join mandrakeclub unless they really can't afford it, especially given Mandrake's financial problems in the past. I'll be at the ALUG meeting at the City Gate on Thursday so people can get their CDs there. Replacement blank CDRs would be appreciated (it's 4 CDs). I've had three people email me so far - any more takers? Joe

AFAIK although the d/l *facility* is reserved for club members only at present, I don't believe that there are any restrictions on sharing the first four CDs once we have them. (CD5 is commercial s/w AFAIR and is more restricted). But, it does need clarification. When I can get on the mandrakeclub forums I'll ask about this. Syd

Suse 8.2 - Internet Connection Sharing

Hi, This is my first post to the group. I hope the question isn't one that is asked all the time. I run a Suse 8.2 on a laptop that is also my only internet connection. I am trying to get my Windows PC to connect to the internet through my Laptop. My IP settings are as follows: Laptop - 192.168.0.1 - 255.255.255.0 Windows - 192.168.0.2 - 255.255.255.0 I have tried using the Suse firewall to enable masquerading, but nothing seems to be working. kernel 2.6

I normally compile my own kernels but I've not had so much trouble as I'm having with 2.6.2 and 2.6.0 before it. I'm running Debian Sarge (Testing). When starting to boot I see 'bios data check successful' then there is a pause of two minutes before the boot continues. In the log I see 'No module symbols loaded - kernel modules not enabled'. apt-get question

I read some time ago in a Linux Mag article that it was possible to filter certain packages out in apt-get upgrade, specifically an upgrade to the kernel. I'm looking to do just that but as usual, I can't find the magazine or any reference on the 'net. So, does anyone here have any experience of filtering out certain packages, for example: kernel*, apache* etc.. So that upgrades to the kernel and apache are not applied, while all other upgrades are. I'm presuming its some configuration option somewhere in /etc/apt... Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Flexbackup

I discovered, a few weeks ago, a backup script called Flexbackup which I rather like. I can use it to backup a remote machine via ssh. Once ssh is setup to do a password-less login Flexbackup can do the rest. What it doesn't provide is an option to restore to a remote machine. Is there a way of retrieving a file or files from a tape on the local machine, using Afio, and passing it across directly to the remote machine via ssh rather than restoring locally and copying across? Hi I have been installing Linux f.o.c. for a number of people at their request, most of these people are just home computer users who are fed up with M$ , viruses, etc They only wish to use their computer for office, internet, Mp3s etc. and have little or no knowledge of computing They all ask me the same question . Alternatives to hash and binary chop search - are there any others?

This isn't really a Linux question but members of this list might have some ideas/answers. I have a little 68000 assembler project I'm doing for someone (paid!) and basically it consists of replacing a 'built on the fly' look-up table with a ready made one which is uploaded with the code. The existing code uses a rather messy hash look-up and one of the reasons for the re-write is to make it simpler and more reliable. A linear search of the table probably isn't a good idea as it would mean that there would be significant differences in look-up time for entries at the beginning and end of the table. I'm leaning towards a binary-chop search but wondered if anyone had any other ideas. Binary-chop is easy in principle but it's often quite difficult to implement in practice because one has to deal with messy boundary conditions. It's also a bit more difficult to create the sorted table necessary automatically and relying on the creator of the table to sort it might be a bit dodgy. The table looks up ATM addresses (16 bit values) given an IP address (32 bit values), maximum size is of the order of 400 entries. -- Chris Green (chris(a)areti.co.uk)

Syleham Meeting Sunday 29th

TV cards and DVD writers in Linux

Does anyone here have any experience of running TV cards and/or DVD writers under Linux? I have a Kworld V-Stream Xpert 883 card (Conexant CX2388x based) and wonder if there might be any Linux software to drive it, the windows software for it is generally pretty awful. Lots of "lets try and make it look like a TV/Video" and very little actual usability. In addition I'd quite like to record the captured video (presumably MPG2) to a DVD (in 'playable on a DVD player; format). I currently have a Liteon LDW811-S DVD writer in my Win2k system, I sort of can write captured MPG2 files to the DVD writer as DVDs but the whole process is distinctly flakey. Will I have all the same problems in Linux because the software is still in its infancy or are things more 'together' unde Linux? -- Chris Green (chris(a)areti.co.uk)

I often try new distros or upgrade the one I am using. Currently I have four partitions on my hard drive. Two are for two different linux distros, one for swap and another for M$. I have just moved from mainly working on one linux distro to the other which has meant copying lots of files from one /home/myuser directory to the other and changing lots of permissions. basically a pain. I am thinking of re-partitioning to include a permanent /home partition which can be used by either linux distro. This way I can install or upgrade distros to my hearts content without having to worry about transferring user files. So the question, does this work, is it practical, are ther any pitfalls? How to find what fonts are available for enscript/CUPS

I have a Slackware 9.1 system with CUPS installed and working. I'm using enscript to print some files. How can I find out what fonts are available (i.e. what can I put after the -f parameter in enscript)? Both Courier and Times-roman work but there are probably others. I don't think they're the same as the X fonts. In /usr/share/cups/fonts there's just Courier so it must be getting Times-roman from somewhere else. Hi All, I've got 3 boxen I want to use in my configuration - 2 RedHat 7.3 boxen (one running Oracle 9i, one running IBM WebSphere) and 1 Mandrake 9.1 box. I've got 1 two-port KVM switch so I can view one of the RedHat boxen as well as my Mandrake desktop. The problem is that I cannot get the other RedHat box to boot in headless mode (I don't want to reinstall since a lot of time and effort went into getting Oracle and WebSphere set up correctly). I've tried using serial cable/minicom for the second box, but no joy. Anyone here managed to get Linux/x86 booting in headless mode? Hi I have been trying to configure my onboard modem on my K7S5A board as I need my serial port for ham radio control. Suse 9.0, finds the modem but I have tried TTYS0 to S4 with no luck. Does anybody know what I should assign it to, or is there other things I should look at? Regards Nick Daniels

Shell buzzer

I am running SuSE 9.0 here, but I've seen this on other distros When in either a tty session on a shell using konsole I have a really annoying warning bleep when I do certain things, an example is pressing backspace when there is nothing to backspace to of if I try to tab complete something that does not exist. In konsole it is using the soundcard and on the tty sessions it uses the PC speaker. How do you get rid of it ? Regards Wayne

Hello List, (Sorry, this may be a little off topic...) As should be obvious I currently use an e-mail account from UEA. But, as with all good things, my time at UEA must eventually come to an end and I was just wandering if anyone knew of anyone who provides free e-mail accounts that would work well with a normal mail client (like KMail, Evolution etc.) I suppose I mean POP-based rather than Web-based. Postfix sender address

I'm running Postfix under Debian (Testing). At present I use an option in my mailer to translate my senders local address to the address I want but I'd prefer to have it done by Postfix. I want barry@localdomain to be translated to barry(a)beenthere-donethat.org.uk I looked through the Postfix documentation and assumed that I need to use the /etc/postfix/canonical file. I have tried the following entries: barry@localdomain barry(a)beenthere-donethat.org.uk @localdomain beenthere-donethat.org.uk None of these work. I still get the included sender address as barry@localdomain. I did remember to run postmap /etc/postfix/canonical and to be on the safe side I also ran postfix reload. I'm trying to set up an ssh connection to a remote system where I have a shell login account and I can't get it to do RSA (or DSA) authentication and not askk me for a password. I have a number of other logins where the passwordless login works fine. For some reason I can't solve a problem I have with Kmail on my laptop which gives the following error every time I try to mail or reply someone. The server did not accept the sender address. The server responded: "Invalid extension (Martin) " The message will stay in the 'outbox' folder until you either fix the problem (e.g. a broken address) or remove the message from the 'outbox' folder. Note: Other messages will also be blocked by this message, as long as it is in the 'outbox' folder The following transport protocol was used: ntlworld Can you help me resolve this problem? The name change is because of a clash with the open source database project of the same name and hopefully we'll get to stick with this one. Mozilla Firefox as it is now known is my browser of choice in both Windows and GNU/Linux so I just thought I'd make sure people were up to date with the latest news. Hi , I want to setuop a VPN but I don't know how to do this: So we have: mikes PCs on internal network --> mike's main pc --> second network card --> cable modem --> internet --> my ADSL modem --> my linux firewall. SpamAssassin False Positives

Morning ALUGers! I've got an interesting one with false positives in SpamAssassin and I'm hoping someone here might have used or even had the same problem. I have a client who runs a precision instrument business for the scientific industry. They have a number of clients out in Japan and legitimate e-mails from them are being flagged as spam. Our default score for spam is 4 and these messages are coming in ranked at 4.495, hence they are being flagged as spam. I'd be happy to change the setting to mark all messages with a score higher than 5 as spam for this client, but that wouldn't stop a small number of spam messages (10) I've received today alone in my own Inbox. We have identified some phrases we believe might be causing the high ranking but I don't actually know how to train SA that these phrases are ok and shouldn't be marked as spam. Apart from increasing (or is it decreasing) the spam ranking for the clients domain to 5, I can't see a way around this. Any suggestions? KL Meeting Postponed

Backing Up and Restoring a Debian System

At the end of this next bit of inane rambling is a question. The inane rambling is there to try and put the question into some sort of context. <inane> By a somewhat circuitous route I've lately been thinking about the best ways to back up and restore my Debian based GNU/Linux system. It was prompted by a number of things one of which was showing someone at work how easy it was to set up a Debian system using Knoppix. I must admit even I was a bit impressed by how easy it was to boot from the CD, run the install to HD script, tweak the sources file, and then apt-get update and apt-get upgrade. Took about an hour to do the lot (including re-arranging the partitions of the existing disk so we could dual boot with Windows*). That included installing GRUB as a boot manager. But it got me thinking about how easy it would be to use Knoppix as a recovery tool if I should need to do a re-install from scratch. And that got me wondering about how I could get from the Knoppix configuration back to my preferred configuration. At the moment I just dump of whole chunks of various partitions using some pre-written backup scripts I got from somewhere (probably just Googled around the web and picked them up from there). But I've always thought that it was a bit of a sledgehammer approach and the there must be a more elegant way of doing this. There is some useful info about back-ups on the Linux documentation Project site (www.tldp.org); Linux Complete Backup and Recovery HOWTO, Ch.8 of Linux Administration Made Easy - Backup and Restore Procedures and Ch.12 of The Linux System Administrator's Guide - Backups. All together these give some pointers to which bits of the system you need to back up. </inane> <question> So say I have just done a complete re-install from Knoppix, and also recovered all the important config files into /etc (e.g. fstab, passwrd, XF86Config, etc). Could I then get enough info from the backed up apt config files to feed into apt and have it install any missing packages, remove any unwanted packages and update any out of date packages (and possibly downdate (is there such a word?) anything too recent)? Is this information something I'd need to generate via apt when I do my back-ups? </question> I you can do this there are some interesting possibilities, like taking regular snapshots of your setup and being able to roll-back to the earlier configurations. Has any one tried this? I've had a look with Google and can't find anything similar but it's entirely possible that I was using inappropriate search words. But I've used Parted before and it worked just as well.

Meeting on the 12th Feb, Norwich

The new choice of venue - The City Gate, Dereham Road - was a great success and many thanks to Brett and Bryce for suggesting it. It has all the benefits of the Forum as well as a few more, which is pretty good going really. More comfortable, better beers and a good selection of food too. Although it is a large pub - a positive - it does not have the emptiness of the Forum which with its cavernous space feels almost like an airport or train station. There's even (unofficial) free parking next door. Kirsten, Adam, Jonathan, Bryce, Brett, Paul C., Ian, Graham and myself - not a bad turn out and chatter included the usual wide range of topics from programming environments to problems with playing DVDs to fine wine tasting. Does anybody know anything about Xandros, I am looking into it on request but I found this in the FAQ Will the desktop be based on KDE or GNOME? Xandros Desktop uses a Xandros enhanced version of KDE. My question is have they actually modified KDE itself, or just reconfigured it and perhaps completely replaced some of the KDE applications. I can't find mention of the source being available anywhere so I am hoping the latter.

Is it possible to save a pointer to a mail message on a Web page

Is there any simple way to have a web page with all the usual sorts of links etc. plus some links which point to mail messages? I want to collect together some E-Mail correspondence, some links to web sites and some pictures (and/or URLs of pictures). Groupware for the home

Hi everyone, My Wife and I both have seperate user accounts as she doesn't like me playing around with things and likes the fact that everytime she logs in it still looks the same!! Trouble is we only have one e-mail account and kmail is set-up the same for both log-ins. This has the annoying effect of received e-mails being split between the two log-ins. I was wondering if anyone could suggest a light-weight groupware package that would stop this? Or, we do have a partition "/shared" where we save common documents and I was wondering if I just copied the contents of the "mail" folders to a mail folder on this shared partition and then sym-linked to this from both home directories? Assuming read/write/group permissions were set up properly, would this work or would it thoroughly break my kmail set-up? Cheers. Martin

how is linux doing in anglia ?

(Sorry couldn't find a better subject for this mail.) Hello, I'm french, 22, studying computer science in an engineering school in France. I might have to move to Norwich in a not too far future (ok, I'm not a real geek since I have a girlfriend in Norwich and we haven't even met on the internet). My problem is I can't really imagine life without a GNU/Linux box close to me, so I was wondering what the status of GNU/Linux is in East Anglia. So, some questions : Is it possible to find linux-related jobs in east anglia, or is it a london-specific thing ? :) Is linux used in the CS department of UEA, or are there windows boxes everywhere ? what are the other universities in anglia with CS departments providing courses in networking and operating systems ? I have changed a couple of settings that helped (I'm not usre if these changes were durable from one session to the next) that helped but I can't remember what I changed, so I probably need to re-visit this topic myself and post some more useful info to help with this query. I think I changed the percentage of a buffer that could be used up before it had to be written to disk, and another thing or two also, but I can't remember more now. Just noticed - you are typing the first letter as 'i' (I) - that should be 'l' (L) Regards Syd Thanks Syd, I had no idea the command was ldconfig. I got the command to run, but it didn't solve my problem. I'm using realplayer 8.0.3.465-10 that came with the SuSE 9 discs. I have uninstalled and installed again using yast, but unfortunately, this didn't solve the problem either. I always use the bbc world http://news.bbc.co.uk/default.stm website to play audio and video links because in the past they have always worked properly. Now, the video links don't play. The message is that the AV console is not yet supported for my system. This is strange because only two weeks ago I was playing video files of Prof Collin Pillinger about Beagle 2 that lasted for an hour, and Tony Blair's interview with Frost (also an hour long). The audio links still work though. Could it be that the bbc site has upgraded and my player is no longer supported? Can you play the files? -- Regards, Bryce.
