Hi Gang,
Another great swim today! I seem to have got a bit burned despite the sunscreen! GPS track below. It's a bit off course to start with - probably because I forgot to turn it on until just before we got in and it didn't have a good lock.

Hi all
Can anyone explain why I thought I was swimming in the wrong direction throughout the swim yesterday, east to west rather than west to east.
Are there ancient lay lines around Radcot that cause a temporary inversion in the Earth's Magnetic Field or was I just confused.
Your help will be gratefully accepted.
I am missing swim six Buscot to Grafton so if anyone is up for a catch please let me know ( I need a friend to point me in the right direction).
Colin

Colin, I reckon you were just confused. The Radcot section is one of the clearly eastward more predominantly eastward sections of the Thames. If you swam the same direction along the river as most of us you were certainly eastbound! I agree it was another good swim, and for once in good weather for a change. Yes. Excellent swim yesterday.
Now just slightly concerned that Colin's channel attempt will lead to land-fall at the Statue of Liberty, NYC! ;-)

PS I am up for joining people to make their catch-up swims quorate. Weekday evenings best for me.

Yes. Definitely in Ox that weekend because tied down with a conference. But free after midday on the Sunday and potentially up for an evening / night dip on the Friday (it might give me an excuse to get out of a dire conference dinner!).

There's a good swimming section upstream of Parson's Pleasure, and it's easy to get out at Parson's Pleasure (which is near the corner of the University Parks, where the cycle route to Marston crosses over the Cherwell, near Mesopotamia). Not sure where the best place to get in would be, depends on how long a swim is required, but there are plenty of places suitable for getting in, as I recall.

Throwing in my 2p here - this is very local to me, and the getting in place at the pub is the Victoria Arms in Old Marston. Joe and Jess the landlords are very friendly, the car park is huge so doesn't seem to ever be a problem leaving cars there (especially if you go back for lunch!).
I keep on wondering about the section one block up the Cherwell, which I've scouted out an 'in' point for but not tried. Whereas the section from the Vicky Arms to Mesopotamia has a path alongside most if not all of the way so easy for escaping onto the land, the next section 'up' doesn't have any sensible access to the river for almost all the way so is more committing.
I'll second that it's a lovely swim, particularly past the University Parks. Just be careful of all the punts on a weekend summer afternoon/evening!

Yes. Definitely in Ox that weekend because tied down with a conference. But free after midday on the Sunday and potentially up for an evening / night dip on the Friday (it might give me an excuse to get out of a dire conference dinner!).

Dear All
I still plan to swim on Friday 16th September in the evening in the Thames at Port Meadow and on Sunday 18th September in the afternoon in the Cherwell from the Victoria Arms at Marston Ferry Road down to Parsons Pleasure.
From the map, it seems that the latter swim is 2.5 to 3 kilometres but I am
awaiting an answer about that.
Friday At the moment, my plan is to meet at the car park near Port Meadow at about 6:30pm (negotiable), walk across to the river and swim upstream until we get bored. Possibility of visit to pub with pies afterwards.

Sunday I am supposed to be having lunch in College but could be persuaded out of that. However, I am tied up until at least 12:30pm and then i have to fetch my car from park and ride. I then plan to leave my car near Linacre College and cycle up to the Vicky Arms. My car can be used to ferry us back to the pub after the swim so long as there are no more than five of us.

Hello,
In theory, I would love to join one or both of these swims. However, having just received details of my other commitments that weekend (conferences etc.), the timings are a little tricky. It is probably best for you and others to make plans that suit you and then, if i can escape early / nip out and join you, I will!
- On Friday: I will probably not be free until 8 / 8:30pm. - On Sunday: I am free between Noon and 3:30pm (so a quick dip may work - and you'll have to have a drink at the Vicky Arms on my behalf).
See those of you swimming on Sunday, Chloe. ________________________________________ From: ossoxon-bounces@earth.li [ossoxon-bounces@earth.li] On Behalf Of Pam Jones [pamjones@btinternet.com] Sent: 08 September 2011 15:29 To: ossoxon@earth.li Subject: [OSS Oxon] Oxford swim September 16 and 18

Hi all
I am going to try to emulate Mr Walliams tomorrow, well do swims 11 and 12 on the same day, which if not Walliams-esque I feel is still pretty impressive. I am hoping to do swim 11 with Chloe, obviously before swim 12 where I hope to meet up with the rest of the group for the 4.30 start.
Can anyone help with the logistics, we will have one car, so I need to know where to park, and what are best arrangements for leaving clothes etc. and getting back to car at the end.
Your help is greatly appreciated.

Hi All
Sorry to invade the group - I emailed with Sefryn earlier in the summer about joining in some swims - can I join you tomorrow at 4.30 pm?
I have enjoyed reading the emails back and forward about who is swimming what and when - but August was just too busy with holiday, work and kids to do to much - but tomorrow is perfect for me.
Let me know - many thanks

PS - are wetsuits allowed - or will people laugh if I wear one?

Colin - start point is Rose Revived, and you can walk there from Northmoor Lock (takes about 20 mins) down the Thames Path. So would suggest you park at the campsite, get changed there, and then you will also have your car and stuff at the start point for swim 12 and camping.
Do you need the directions for the campsite? Think these are on the Swim 10 & 11 event info, but let me know if you need it

Hi all
If only I had read instructions, but that's another story, for swim 12.
My plan is to park at Northmoor lock walk back to Rose Revived, swim to Northmoor, wait for swim 12 to start, sound feasible?
Next question.
How long will walk to RR and swim to Northmoor Lock take?

I am going to try to emulate Mr Walliams tomorrow, well do swims 11 and 12 on the same day, which if not Walliams-esque I feel is still pretty impressive. I am hoping to do swim 11 with Chloe, obviously before swim 12 where I hope to meet up with the rest of the group for the 4.30 start.
Can anyone help with the logistics, we will have one car, so I need to know where to park, and what are best arrangements for leaving clothes etc. and getting back to car at the end.

Hello,
In theory, I would love to join one or both of these swims. However, having just received details of my other commitments that weekend (conferences etc.), the timings are a little tricky. It is probably best for you and others to make plans that suit you and then, if i can escape early / nip out and join you, I will!

Dear All
I still plan to swim on Friday 16th September in the evening in the Thames at Port Meadow and on Sunday 18th September in the afternoon in the Cherwell from the Victoria Arms at Marston Ferry Road down to Parsons Pleasure.

I need to catch-up for swims #5 and #11 so would be potentially interested in doing either one of these earlier on Saturday. Can offer support team and some transport if required...

I then plan to leave my car near Linacre College and cycle up to the Vicky Arms. My car can be used to ferry us back to the pub after the swim so long as there are no more than five of us.
Start point

Perhaps we could have a cup of tea or something stronger at the Vicky Arms at the end.

I need to catch-up for swims #5 and #11 so would be potentially interested in doing either one of these earlier on Saturday. Can offer support team and some transport if required...

Colin - I thought the catch-up swim we had pencilled to do in at the end of this week / tomorrow was swim #5. I've done swim #11!

Hi all
If only I had read instructions, but that's another story, for swim 12.
My plan is to park at Northmoor lock walk back to Rose Revived, swim to Northmoor, wait for swim 12 to start, sound feasible?
Next question.
How long will walk to RR and swim to Northmoor Lock take?
Colin
PS Please no more sarky comments from school teachers who should know better and I am glad to see are now off our streets..

Hi all
I am going to try to emulate Mr Walliams tomorrow, well do swims 11 and 12 on the same day, which if not Walliams-esque I feel is still pretty impressive.
Colin

Hello,
In theory, I would love to join one or both of these swims. However, having just received details of my other commitments that weekend (conferences etc.), the timings are a little tricky. It is probably best for you and others to make plans that suit you and then, if i can escape early / nip out and join you, I will!
- On Friday: I will probably not be free until 8 / 8:30pm.
- On Sunday: I am free between Noon and 3:30pm (so a quick dip may work -
and you'll have to have a drink at the Vicky Arms on my behalf).
See those of you swimming on Sunday, Chloe. ________________________________________ From: ossoxon-bounces@earth.li [ossoxon-bounces@earth.li] On Behalf Of Pam Jones [pamjones@btinternet.com] Sent: 08 September 2011 15:29 To: ossoxon@earth.li Subject: [OSS Oxon] Oxford swim September 16 and 18
Dear All
I still plan to swim on Friday 16th September in the evening in the Thames at Port Meadow and on Sunday 18th September in the afternoon in the Cherwell from the Victoria Arms at Marston Ferry Road down to Parsons Pleasure.
From the map, it seems that the latter swim is 2.5 to 3 kilometres but I am awaiting an answer about that.
Friday At the moment, my plan is to meet at the car park near Port Meadow at about 6:30pm (negotiable), walk across to the river and swim upstream until we get bored. Possibility of visit to pub with pies afterwards.

Well done you (in advance)! Don't emulate the Delhi-Thames-belly though... Would love to join you, but had altercation with a horse last week, going into free-fall dive, and ending up with sprained right hand & bruised left ribcage, ergo inability to move arms & breathe at the same time. However, managed to paddle in between Dorchester & Shillingford on Wed, to shout some encouragement at him, and got an enthusiastic wave back (or was it a limp v-sign?) Anyway, good luck, one and all!
