I think I fixed it by installing a different file manager.
The other thing worth trying might be to format the card from the tablet. I have a vague recollection of being prompted to do this at least once, but can't recall now if I did it or not.

I wondered about the file manager app too and swapped. No dice. May try another just to see, though. It got formatted when I first slotted it in. Elsewhere it was suggested unmounting and then remounting could work but if I try to eject it, it doesn't really do anything. (Perhaps because it hasn't fully recognised it?) Beginning to wonder if the card is OK. Bev.
