Showing an X window on Win98 desktop
I've heard this was possible and wanted to give it a try. Either get one of the Win X emulators, or investigate VCN from http://research-att.co.uk. There are two main contenders one can play with, and one more that's pay only. The first, from labtam (http://www.labf.com) runs for 30 mins then dies, which is a pain. The second, from starnet (http://starnet.com) last for 2 hrs, with nag screens every 30 mins, then dies. I've used the former extensively, and it works, and the latter a bit, recently, and it works just fine so far I'm sticking to starnet's one though, because 30 mins is never enough! They are both pretty expensive to buy, too much for home use, IMO. The best of the lot, and loadsa money (about £600), is Hummingbird Exceed. If you have a Linux server running X, and 95/98/nt clients, I think one of these gizmos is essential. VNC (qv. Raphael) works, is free, but is slow. Cheers, Laurie. What about MI/X from http://www.microimages.com/mix/? The Windows version is shareware, but if you use Windows, then you expect every closed-source vendor to hit you for money, no? The Mac version works well, but I've not tried the windows version as the university has a site licence for eXceed (which is less than perfect).

Interestingly, I find VNC *much* faster over high-latency links (across JANet particularly) and it is hardly slow across high-speed links - suck it and see... I find X is better over a momdem (when ssh tunneled), but without a ssh compressed tunnel, vnc is normally better for me when tuned right (8bit colors etc):) I use VNC to remotely backup our servers which run BRU :) - a wicked backup program - never had a problem with it yet - touch wood :), and its reasonable on a modem - despite the extremely graphical GUI.
