Same here...no way I can make the 23rd but the 30th may be a go...no promises but I will make a real effort (if not only because there are a few reservations on the Library) If I do come is anybody (who hasn't got the patience or hardware to get it running properly themselves) interested in a demo of XGL and Compiz ? My machine is running it quite smoothly now..but it's a lot of kit to lug down if nobody is particularly interested.

XGL in itself an OpenGL layer for X. On it's own it does nothing that looks new (although it will make an xserver faster if you have hardware acceleration) Compiz is a composition/window manager and it's that bit that generates all the fancy effects you can see (well more accurately plug-ins for compiz) in screenshots all over the web...it just needs Xgl to do it.

The way I have mine set up compiz and xgl are only enabled if I select a new session I created from the GDM menu..If I select my old session (which hasn't been modified) then everything is back to how it was. Erm, I'll get back to you on that...the Expose style switcher is a good plus for usability in my opinion and I could see how the transparency could be useful (although you need an additional transet package to make it really useful) but no...pretty much everything else is eye candy :-)

If anyone is interested I can bring along my mini-ITX box that's configured for playing DVDs with hardware MPEG decoding and 5.1 sound. It plays DVDs with < 5% CPU load.
