Have you tried Gthumb? I used it a lot in the past, I found it fairly light and fast enough for the more minimal photo editing as opposed to anything like gimp.

Though many things are more minimal than gimp. I look to the day when someone creates an intuitive graphics program! I find editing photos on a phone far simpler. Bev.
