The first problem is that I can't even see what version of Firefox it is
You have my sympathy and I take your struggle as another reason to look at Mint when I need to upgrade. Apparently Firefox are heading towards (automatically?) upgrading versions without giving version numbers. Not, I feel, their best idea.
