I never used to do much bread-baking, because the kneading took too much out of me. I wondered for ages why other people found it easy, then I realised it was because I'm shorter than whoever designs most kitchen worksurfaces expects cooks to be. So now I knead on the floor. If you're also on the short side, put down some newspapers, then a large chopping board or other flat, cleanable thing, kneel down next to it, and knead on that. You can put all your bodyweight into it this way, and you don't get a sore back from trying to press down on a too-high surface.
