Lysosome

An organelle found in eukaryotic cells. It contains the digestive enzymes within a single membrane, thus preventing self-digestion of the cell.

The lysosome digests material taken into the cell by phagocytosis or pinocytosis. It liberates its enzymes when a cell is injured, thus helping to digest and remove dead cells. This process is called autolysis - self-dissolution by damaged tissue.
