Point at which an animal cell is strongly attached to a neighbouring cell. At a desmosome, the cell membrane is thickened and the space between the cells is filled with various types of filament connecting the two.
A spot desmosome has roughly circular points of contact and a belt desmosome has continuous bands of contact extending round the cell.
