Function of the Week : Week -1, Hilary 1999

The function of the week for Week -1 of Hilary Term 1999 is:

f(r) = (1 - exp(-b(r -
r0)))^2

If you're a mathmo, see if you can sketch it (hints are available). There's a plot of it here. It's something to do with atomic spacing in a molecule - a physicist gave it to me. He says:

It's the Morse function, and it has a factor of D outside it. It describes the separation dependence of energy of two atoms making up a molecule. The molecules tend to stay at r=r0, where energy is a minimum, but if you wobble them, they vibrate to higher energies
