Turns out you can find MAX232 level converters for really cheap on
ebay. I got some that are breadboard compatible with a DB9 on one tiny
board for $9. I use them for my AVR project so I don't even have to
have full RS232 on the pcb at all, just a couple of RX/TX pins.
