Hi, anyone likely to be in the Thames in Oxford this Saurday morning? I have the pleasure of an overnight at the Four Pillars Hote,l off Abingdon Road (opposite the Hinkey Pool) Friday and wondered if I could gate crash a cold water plunge before I get off home to the Great Ouse?
It looks like the river runs adjacent to the grounds of the hotel - anyone know if this is a good swimming spot?
Regards all, spring is a coming - sometime soon, Bryn

Hello,
If anyone wants to join me either doing a pottering gentle breast stroke or head-down crawl then I can be at either of these two spots between 19:30 to 19:45 start - the swim would be no longer than about an hour.
Temps are nice at the moment and so you can either suit-up or not.
I don't have any preference which spot I go to as they are both great , both straight, deep and wide and both suit all levels of swimming.
They are easy to get to, to park at and to change at as well.
Dorchester on Thames http://www.multimap.com/s/OP5NAFHP
This is marked where the lay-by is.
Little Stoke http://www.multimap.com/s/jkX7c9vf
This is where we would park - there is a track down to the 'Old Dairy' which is a 2 minute walk to the river, it's very secluded and peaceful here.
If anyone wants to join me on either day let me know which you prefer, else you'll have to take pot-luck and look for my Green Polo if you turn up on the day.
Either way I'll be there between those times.
Only reply if you intend coming.
Thanks
James

The water literally next to the hotel is not the Thames proper, that's a few hundred metres east - not sure what exactly you are looking at as I haven't been to the 4 pillars to stay. I haven't swam that part (we plan to do this stretch sometime this year swimming the Thames between the Oxford Ring Road north to south) but have swum extensive north of the city so I expect it to be similar, but I expect this will be busy with rowers - probably - you can see the boat house on the other side of the river but swimming wise, if it is anything like the Thames further up it will be fine, the grounds that are either side are owned by the colleges so you don't tend to get the detritus you can on more public ground.
The public foot path is on 'the hotel side' of the river so you can walk back all the way, what I am not sure about are access points in and out.
Hope this helps.
James
Hi Bryn,
I haven't had a swim for a long time as I had twwin boys in July but I live ten mins walk away from the Hotel and would love to accompany you for a dip. As James said, there are rowers on that stretch and it may be quite busy on a saturday, especially as the weather is improving and there are regattas starting but we could swim a bit further yet towards Port meadow, I've been there several times, last when I was pregnant in the summer. Let me know as it depends on how much time you have, the walk would take about half an hour but it's a lovely walk! All the best, Jenny

Hi Bryn,
Don't think I've swam with you since Cambridge last June and would be good to get started again this year but afraid I'm away on Saturday. I do most of my swimming in Oxford and I'd definitely agree with Jenny that Port Meadow is the place to head, less boats, a bit more rural, natural beaches to get in and out off and a couple of nice pubs nearby. Definitely think the stretch behind the hotel will be rammed with rowers and the odd punt (it's also relatively narrow) but if you head about a mile south along the Thames path (passed Iffley Lock) then that stretch has fewer (but larger) boats and the river is a bit wider - Port Meadow is still a bit more picturesque and swimmer friendly though.
Enjoy it wherever you get in.
Best, Jaime

I'd be interested in a swim on Saturday morning. I would need to be back at Wantage by late lunch - twins at party in afternoon :)
Have never swum up at Port meadow but would be keen to try. I'd want to confirm on Friday - current Saturday forecast is heavy rain which isn't particularly tempting for me at this time of year.

Hi Bryn and everyone else, I'm around Saturday morning, so count me in. I'd opt for somewhere around Port Meadow too, either up Binsey Lane by The Peach Pub or up in Wolvercoat by The Trout pub (Can anyone with better local knowledge suggest a meet point?). I can't make this weekend (away from Oxford) but in terms of good meeting places I'd suggest the car park at the end of Walton Well Road as a good southern option:
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?&ll=51.762412,-1.273534&z=19
or the Wolvercote car park off Godstow Road as a northern option:
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?ll=51.78147,-1.295252&z=19
With enough cars a shuttle between the two can save a lot of time.
Hope you have a fun swim; don't be put off by the weather, swimming in the rain is fun!

I've not seen anyone suggest a time, so how about 10am at Walton Well car park as suggested by Tim below. I've swum with Tim and others 2-3 times from there and it doesn't seem too frequented by rowers. Also I know the setup and can show Oxford newbies the way to the river if noone else is around, although as usual I'll leave entirely up to you any decisions you make to swim or not.
Personally, I'll probably walk up river a bit and then swim downstream - probably not too long given the time of year, but we'll see how I feel in the morning!
Cheers Bob

Bob,
We are meeting at (or just before) 10:00 at the Walton Well car park.

Personally, I'll probably walk up river a bit and then swim downstream

Hi - have done the swim before, but not without support team who carried stuff etc! Just wondering what the deal is - do we just turn up in wetsuits, walk up the river barefoot, then swim down, and run back to the cars? I'd be interested in a swim on Saturday morning. I would need
to be
back at Wantage by late lunch - twins at party in afternoon :) Have never swum up at Port meadow but would be keen to try.
I'd want
to confirm on Friday - current Saturday forecast is heavy
rain which
isn't particularly tempting for me at this time of year. Regards Andrew On 07/03/2011 21:54, Mary-Jennifer McDowell wrote: Hi Bryn, I haven't had a swim for a long time as I had twwin boys in

extensive north
of the city so I expect it to be similar, but I expect this will be
busy
with rowers - probably - you can see the boat house on the other side
of the
river but swimming wise, if it is anything like the Thames
further up it
will be fine, the grounds that are either side are owned by the colleges so you don't tend to get the detritus you can on more public
ground.
The public foot path is on 'the hotel side' of the
river so
you can walk back all the way, what I am not sure about are access
points
in and out. Hope this helps. James _______________________________________________ OSS Oxon mailing list OSSOxon@earth.li http://www.earth.li/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/ossoxon Please note that OSS Oxon exists to put swimmers in

We haven't organised anything except to meet and have a swim. If you've swum there before your well ahead of me (and Bryn I expect) on possible logistical complications!
Lacking a better plan I'll probably walk up river some distance wearing some beach shoes which I find Ok to swim in. If the water is 6C I doubt I'll walk far up river!

I've been there before. What we've done before is arrive in cossie, put wetsuit on, hide car keys (unless there's a non swimmer) walk up river - with wetsuit shoes ideally (so you can swim back in them) and then swim back, rush to the cas towel and most then change into dry clothes - although I tend to come equipped with a few towels, wrap them round me and on the seat and drive home wet for a hot shower!

Cheers Bob

I've been there before. What we've done before is arrive in cossie, put wetsuit on, hide car keys (unless there's a non swimmer) walk up river - with wetsuit shoes ideally (so you can swim back in them) and then swim back, rush to the cas towel and most then change into dry clothes - although I tend to come equipped with a few towels, wrap them round me and on the seat and drive home wet for a hot shower!

Lacking a better plan I'll probably walk up river some distance wearing some beach shoes which I find Ok to swim in. If the water is 6C I doubt I'll walk far up river!

Spot on Bob.
Huge thank you to Molly for being custodian of the keys and what a lovely stretch of water. Warmer than I had expected / feared with a warm breeze and sunshine to match, roll on spring.
Great to read you are going in for the Full Moon too. As you say Bob the moon will rise early and be at its biggest during the sunset period. Hope it's a cloud free evening.
Have lots of fun and thank you for sharing your swim spot.
Bryn

Lovely swim this morning. Thanks Bryn for initiating the idea, Louise for guidance, Andrew for company and Molly for carrying the keys!

Hi everyone I'm off to Cornwall for the week, and it is also still a tad cold for me outdoor swimmingwise. Have a lovely time and see you when it is warmer! (what a lightweight - you'd never know I was from Newcastle!) Judyx

Hi Bryn and everyone else,
I'm around Saturday morning, so count me in. I'd opt for somewhere around Port Meadow too, either up Binsey Lane by The Peach Pub or up in Wolvercoat by The Trout pub (Can anyone with better local knowledge suggest a meet point?). Just let me know where and when and I'll be there!

Regards Andrew

I haven't had a swim for a long time as I had twwin boys in July but I live ten mins walk away from the Hotel and would love to accompany you for a dip. As James said, there are rowers on that stretch and it may be quite busy on a saturday, especially as the weather is improving and there are regattas starting but we could swim a bit further yet towards Port meadow, I've been there several times, last when I was pregnant in the summer. Let me know as it depends on how much time you have, the walk would take about half an hour but it's a lovely walk! All the best, Jenny

Hi Bryn, James,
I'm a bit confused by this mail as to who is staying where? Unfortunately I'm away this weekend so can't make it for a dip. Anyway hope you find some swimming buddies, it will be lovely if the weather is the same as this weekend!

Hi - I'm very keen on some swimming, but don't think the stretch along there is much use as it's busy with rowers and pleasure cruises etc. Others may know different. Also can't do Saturday mornings. Enjoy if you do get a swim. Louise On 7 Mar 2011, at 22:51, rebecca wills wrote:
