What I've decided to buy as a low power system
I've found this MSI Titan 700 system:- http://www.cclonline.com/product-info.asp?id=21448 I've not actually bought it from CCL because they're out of stock at the moment, I bought it from Lambdatek (slightly cheaper too). Low power VIA processor, all ready put together for me, Gigabit LAN, what more could I want? Hardly any more expensive than a NAS and much more capable. -- Chris Green

On a vaguely related note (it is a small machine) I can recommend the Lenovo thinkcentre A61e USFF machines Ebuyer are peddling out for silly money at the moment. The powerbrick is only rated at 120W or so, I'd imagine they are pretty efficient and seem really quiet when running. The CPU is the new BE low power range (45W from memory, the 2GHz Via is about 20, but at idle there will be a smaller difference) so overall this probably isn't significantly any worse on power consumption than Via based machines. Dual core AMD, 1GB RAM, 160GB HDD, DVR-RW in a mini-itx like format for £195+VAT, pretty much zero expansion possibilities beyond what you can plug into USB and of course they are pre-installed with XP. But if you are looking for a small and quiet machine then certainly worth a look.

Wow, that is cheap and low power - just what I need to replace the home fileserver and web cache proxy. The next most important question is: How quiet is it? Tim.

The first few I have installed were in a dental surgery in the individual practice rooms (which tend to be pretty quiet when patients aren't in there). In those rooms I would have said that the machines were pretty much as close to silent as you are going to get with a mechanical hard drive. There is a single case fan which also blows through the cpu heatsink (this of course is under thermal control) I have some more being delivered Monday so on Tuesday when I am setting them up for the client I will try and pay particular attention to the noise levels.
