My exchange is about to be converted to broadband (yes!) and I've been advised that getting a router would be the easiest way of getting it to work with linux. In the estemed ALUG's opinion, is this so? The cost isn't really a problem, but I'm concerned about configuration (if any is needed. My knowledge of networks stops at being able to explain what a token ring is...and I have to use 'lord of the flies' as an example) thanks, BenE

Go to dabs.com and look at actiontec stuff. A few people recommended me the adsl router + wireless (all in one). -- (o_ - Craig Butcher //\ - IT Technician / Unix Support MTH/ENV @ UEA V_/_ - http://www.wizball.co.uk

I just did this for a customer, and used an MRI USB/Ethernet ADSL router with the conexant chipset from Scan (it cost 47.50 plus VAT). It wasn't trivial to do, but not that hard either. I still have some challenges with BT's NAT, but it's talking to a Linux firewall through a crossover cable just fine. I go a DLINK wireless+adsl+4port ethernet fro www.netshop.co.uk. Easy to set up. Works a treat. On 09-May-2003 Craig wrote:

Start with http://www.adslguide.org. Avoid anyone who wants you to sign up for a year, and (this is an opinion) anyone who insists on bundling a USB modem. Consider going with someone who offers fixed IP addresses; it doesn't have to cost more and you can plonk down a public server anytime you like. Go for a 'wires only' service, though there is an advantage in getting the router from your ISP; they're more likely to talk to you when things go wrong (as they do). The alternative to all this is a dedicated Linux box with PCI modem. It all depends on a) how much space you have, b) how good you are at setting up firewalls, c) how much you care about your electricity bill, etc. etc. -- GT
I can recommend the Solwise 715 router/modem/switch which is under a hundred pounds. These links may help: http://www.solwise.co.uk/modems.htm#SAR715 www.adslguide.org.uk Very good on hardware reviews Take Care, Jamie -----Original Message----- From: main-admin@lists.alug.org.uk [mailto:main-admin@lists.alug.org.uk]On Behalf Of BenE Sent: 10 May 2003 00:07 To: main@lists.alug.org.uk Subject: [Alug]Routers My exchange is about to be converted to broadband (yes!) and I've been advised that getting a router would be the easiest way of getting it to work with linux.
