...and does modprobe like it any better? Sometimes it can be that something else is required that you haven't included. The dependency handling of building kernel modules is rather primitive, sadly.

Fixed! I rebuilt the kernel with pcmcia support compiled in rather than as a module, and it works! I now have a laptop with USB and PCMCIA. *joy* Thanks for all the suggestions and help, Jenny.
