conf.modules is for setting up alias's etc... I mean for actually telling init what to load in the way of modules.
If it's like Debian's modules.conf (ie, it's the antique pre-renaming file), then I believe it can also load modules on boot. Of course, if you want the module there all the time, why bother compiling it as a module? -- MJR
