Best way to play .MOV files under GNU/Linux
Any trekkies out there might be interested to know about a bunch of Minnesota fans who have made their own Star Trek look-alike episode using the original Star Trek look and feel, see <http://www.StarshipExeter.com> The episode is offered as a series of QuickTime .mov files, can anyone suggest the best way I can view these on a Debian Woody based system? Grab the crossover plugin from www.codeweavers.com. It's basically wine, but with a slick install/configure interface that saves you a lot of time and effort. Well worth the money, and you can sleep easy at night knowing your cash is helping the development of Wine. The crossover office solution is also good, if you need to run MS Office 2k apps on your linux machine. Andrew. -- All views are my own .... who else would want them?

well I suppose that if you must watch star trek derived works ;) http://www.mplayerhq.hu/homepage/ and you can try the line deb http://marillat.free.fr/ unstable main in your /etc/apt/sources.list and the usual apt-get update apt-cache search mplayer to see which binary you want to install. It's in the xine readme somewhere. I haven't got it to hand, but if memory serves, it involves just copying the various files to a special directory[tm]. I think it's a bit of a grey area legally (if you're bothered by such things) if taken from your own copy of windows, and it's non-open code so it will 'pollute' linux too (again, if you're bothered by such things). Couldn't find it in xine but the mplayer readme was a good souce of info and the site of actual codec binaries.

I echo Andrew's suggestion of using Crossover - one of the best bits of software in my system, for sure. It does everything! Thanks for the pointer to Starship Exeter - looks fantastic.
