With 2.6, you can do things like "zcat /proc/config.gz | grep SOUND" to see if it's in the kernel (has a y by it), but I don't think that's in 2.4. On that bbs thread, they say it's in the kernel, so I guess we'll trust them. If you want to change that, you need to reconfigure and rebuild your kernel. I'd find answers to these questions useful: Which ALSA web site instructions are you following? What happens/doesn't happen? What error does "modprobe snd-intel8x0" give, if any?
