There's a page at http://www.gimp.org/fonts.html which also has the URW free fonts. I didn't find GIMP difficult to add fonts to, once you realise that "xset fp rehash" is needed to find fonts installed since last X restart. GNUstep is a bit trickier. Ghostscript, CUPS and Sketch are lots more difficult. If you say what sort of fonts you're trying to install (Type1? TrueType?) and what system (Debian has defoma, which I think changes things), then maybe someone can give better advice.
