Drama over.. I don't think I had done any updates recently as there were loads waiting to be done. Anyway, via SSH I did apt-get update/upgrade/dist-upgrade and rebooted and now my desktop is back. I tried several reboots before this without getting it back so i have no idea what changed between a working system and a broken one, and then between that and a working one again. Bizzare...
