First published in Great Britain in 1994.
First, a warning. If you've ever read The Magus (John Fowles) then you will be disappointed by this book. Halfway through (just before the narrator discovers this book on his girlfriend's shelf, in fact) you will realise exactly what's happening to the narrator and why it's happening. Even the ending, while different from Fowles', is as obvious and puerile as it could possibly be. It seems as though Rosenberg has just decided to put The Magus in a different context, but found himself stuck for an ending with the deadline looming.
If you haven't read The Magus, however, I do recommend Rosenberg's version. Despite the criticisms above, I did enjoy reading this book; I was just somewhat disappointed, as it's not as good.31 March 1998
