aha - life is progressing a bit better with the box. Status so far.
I have changed dialup to dial "1"
Using my high tech home telephone exchange

---------------------------------------------------------------------
modem STB
-----------------------| |-----------------------------
                       | |
                          +12v supply

Using windows hyperterminal:-
I can now run ATA on my pc and dial on the STB this causes (i have found dial
first the run ATA)
Dialing.....
Verifing.....
and wait for it drops the line!
BUT and most importent the two connect at 33k (yes!) this is of course the
modem speed.
and gives gibberish on the screen (should it).
I dunno what speed to set, I presume 115200 as the speed of the modem
connection is not reqired as that is connection speed is TO THE modem and not from
the connection?

Stage 2

Using Windows XP I now add new connection/advance connection/accept incoming
(is this PPP/TCPIP??). using my modem as the connecting device. setting as
guest
Now in modem settings use the advance section add ATA in extra commands (for
the modem).

Now modem automaticly runs ata and picks the line up and then transfer begins
between the two.
Dialing....
Verifing....

and.....................SOD ALL!!!!!!! No connection, OK chaps what now over
to you for a few pointers.

I *might* use windows 2000 server but I think the problem will be the same.
Only other thing to try is the serial connection on the STB (serial port 1). I
am willing to build one and try the basic program that has been listed in one
of the posts. Do I need DCD/RTS/CTS or can I just use TX/RX/GND and keep
handshaking to none? TX pin 79 and RX pin 78.

Using the serial port will then stop the need for my fake exchange.

questions are:-
 modem connection speed (PC)
 TX/RX serial port connections
PPP for XP connection - could it be a case of tcp/ip id? ie 192.198.0.1?

Thanks (still having fun)

Peter
